New RFF Under Construction - take a look

Once we start the transition both new and old RFF sites will be online,
viewable, but not available for members to post.

Once most new site basics are operational, members will be able to post on the new version, but not on the old RFF.

Still, there will be many rough spots, for at least a few weeks.

Eventually the new RFF site will be complete enough for the old RFF site to be taken down and save the cost.

We are limited by what the new software will allow us to do.

Many asked for changes in this thread are not possible, while others are.

Fasten your seat belts, there will be a few bumps.

It looks like it won't be incorporated into the new. And it looks like it is going to fade away, like an old soldier. Just like the original Leica forum that was the precursor of the present photo.net.

Why can't it continue in some form, like a sub-forum of the new one?

Oh, whew, that's better. I do like the present format style, but, OK, that's just the price of progress.

Thank goodness! It's a veritable goldmine of history and information. The internet is littered with the spaces where vibrant forums once existed, and it would be such a shame if RFF went the same way.

The old version will become RangeFinderImages as a reference until all the changes are made that we are able to. Then it will be taken down

Overall, great! There is already a dark mode, y'all - it's in the bottom left corner (it looks like a muddy green-brown on my browser though). Here are a few constructive things I found to improve. FYI I am accessing on Big Sur 11.4 and Firefox 90.0.2.

-remove the Facebook and Twitter buttons on every post

-there is a space for a signature on posts even when they don't have a signature; also the bottom line of the signature is shorter than the top

• GOOD - "Dark" background
• REMOVE - social media links
• NEUTRAL - "Like" button, agree with David although there are times I don't want to comment and the "Like" button is apropos
• NEUTRAL/GOOD - takes me awhile to get used to a new look and feel (Dark Mode) but it's growing on me
• COMMENT - Not seeing Post/View counts (if that's important)
• QUESTION - I can see latest commented on thread from 'Forum' > 'Latest Activity', but how do you get to latest 'Post' in that thread similar to the 3-dot right-facing chevron in the current forum?

Remove all media, buttons don't connect them to the forum.
It is better to leave them alone.

I like the white back ground and it is good to have a choice to move into the Dark one when necessary !!
Can we have a tab for our contents/ posts? I could not find it anywhere and perhaps I did not look closely.

What's wrong with keeping the same password for both? It's hard to keep track of all the passwords I have to have, so I like to use the same password for several sites if I don't think they are critical ones for security.

When I wrote this post the new site was insecure. The most risk for users is their password could be harvested by criminals. Data packets sent using HTTP connections do not encrypt passwords (or anything else you type). If a criminal records these packets they have your username and password. If you use use private messages on the HTTP site, set and received unencrypted message packets can be read by anyone with packet capture software.

If the username and password is used on any other web site(s), then your credentials could be used on the other site(s). Criminals could then change the password and assume your one-line identify for that site. Or, any private information shared using web site message services could be recorded.

HTTPS protocols encrypt your sent and received data packets.

Does having the full photos in posts in any thread make that thread slow to load? I'm always having to wait yonks for the "What have you just BOUGHT" thread to open, on other forums that use clickable thumbnails that doesn't usually happen.

Will there be a "notice" period that gives us a week or something to register with the new site once it's fully sorted out and running?

Forgive me if someone already said this, but i did not have the time to read all of the prior responses.

I love the existing site, and will certainly love the new one more. Please do what you can to simplify the process of posting images. It seems that no matter where I start (i.e., Flickr), or how i resize, i cannot post. Shame on me in that lots of people do post, but some level of official guidance or simplification would be appreciated.

I've just signed in to the new site using my current name etc. but when I clicked on a couple of threads all I got was a blank screen with the little thingy going in circles, so I decided to log-out but still got a blank screen.

Now I even get a blank screen when I click on the link at the top of this thread.

Are there any OS's or browsers that the new site can't work with?

So is the new site now set up with HTTPS? And if so, do we need to do something special to make sure we are HTTPS on our end? Or is that automatic?

The new site is updated to use https.

All browsers I'm familiar with automatically invoke https when supported by a web site.
