I thought i'd kill 2 birds here,

Just got my new old, tatty, Rolleiflex. I fell in love with it, but I can see a lotta arguments with this thing. It seems a bit temperamental/clumsy and needs a little more work that the 'bay auction let on! The shutter works, 1,1/2,1/5 speeds are all snappy, and the higher ones sound fine. I'll run a roll of film through it today. The fine scratches on the taking lens nearly made me cry.

Who could do this to a camera?!

For all those interested, theres about 100 left of each I think:

don't sell you rollei short, it'll be a good shooter for sure!

Todd

Let's hope so, but I dont hold out too much hope to begin with... first things first I need to make the hood close properly (iron out the dents) and replace the viewing screen!

I got a rolleiflex T recently that also had massive damage to the taking lens. I ended up repolishing it (well, removing the coating) using dental polish paste and a dremmel. Now it's beautiful again, and very, very sharp....

Pretty much as described, but I just wasted a roll of 120!!!

ARGH!!

I close the back on the camera, and it won't wind onto the next number - the film counter stays at zero. I've no idea whats wrong.

With the back open it winds on properly (the total opposite of my Rolleicord), and with the back from my 'cord on it and closed it winds on properly. Something on the 'flex back is grinding against the camera I think. The lever winds on, but the counter won't move.

Any idea's??

If I can't fix the back or source a new one - anyone know a dealer with parts?? - then I'm getting a refund, but I really dont want to get a refund 🙁

Which type Rolleiflex is it?
From the picture it looks like an automat 3-4 or such.
When I close the door of my automat 2, there's abump on the door that is supposed to push the lever next to the bottom spool. The lever pushed in and the film between the two rollers activates the "automat" feature of the counter.
Be sure to have the film going through the two rollers at the bottom side, not above both of them but in between.
Be sure that the lever ispushed in when you close the door. Just before closing you can peak into the camera bottom from side/bottom and you can see if the lever is pushed in or the little thingy on the camera back misses it and goes just near.
If the back is warped it could be the case.
Also, could be that the lever itself is bent a bit.
It also could be stuck in the pushed-in position, you can check by pushing / pulling on it by hand.
When you push by hand you should hear a clacking sound and it should shift backward rather easily.

I hope it helps.

OK,more carefully reading your alst message, some extra:
The 'cord does NOT have the automat feature (auto start of counting), therefore has no thingy to push the lever in.
The counter works, but is not reset nor stopped because the lever is not pushed in.
If you wind w the back open, it's correct, it should work. At any number shown on the counter w the back open, pushing the lever in by hand should reset the counter, with the clacking sound I mentioned. Check THIS first.
Then check if the lever is activated by the thingy on the camera back.
What happens is the following (or what SHOULD happen):
The lever is pushed in by the back. This way the two rollers are released and by some spring they get closer to each other. When film goes through them (not only paper backing), they are distanced again, which allows the counter to work properly and stop at each frame.
If i remember correctly, at least. My flex is at home now.

EDIT: most logically, it sounds as the film is not threaded through the two rollers and therefore when you close the body w the properly working back, the film just winds on without activating the counter mevchanism (the two rollers never "feel" the thick film through them)...

Yep The numbers wind on correctly with the back open and a film spooled (hence the wasted roll of 120) - and the tab at the bottom resets the counter as per your instruction.

When I close the back, the film count resets to zero, but the count does not start when winding begins. I can hear the film winding on (although sounds like there is too much tension) and the shutter cocks, etc... but the counter remains at zero.

Well as above, the film definitely wind's on. I've had to 'rewind' the film by hand about 15 times now from faffing around with the wind-on!

The help so far has been great, and any more help would be appreciated!

It's really puzzling. It really is.

There's the back (the bottom) two views, and the tab/lever that resets the film count.

Any other's look different? Would I get away with removing or adding something?

Ash, sorry if I missed something, but I think what was meant that you have to put the film under the 'feeler' roller (this shiny thick one on your last picture). It will wind on (to the end of the roll) anyway, but it won't stop at frame 1 if it's not under the feeler roller

Regards, Robert

Oh really? Maybe I'm too used to my 'cord...

{re-threads the test roll}

Bit of a dodgy feeling start to the wind-on....but.... it works!!! 😀

Schoolboy error after all!

Thanks SO much!

I feel like a RIGHT clutz now. At least its sorted.

Thanks for everybodies help!
