I just saw a new Sigma 'street shooter' digital camera with Foveon chip, has a 28mm 35mm equivalent lens (fixed) and attachable optical vf which mounts on the flash shoe.
Street price of $700-$800.
Quite small, and sort of retro looking.
Manual focus, and exposure adjustment.
Not enough for me to give up film, but interesting nonetheless.
It is possible that this has been out for a while, I just saw a sample today.

You must be talking about the DP-1. There was a recent thread about it here.

Not impressed with the lens? I've personally seen some jaw dropping photos taken with it, in terms of sharpness and lack of distortion, but I wonder if they were exceptional images?

The lens on the camera is actually pretty incredible. Sharp to the edges and little to no distortion.

Ambitious, but rubbish
From what I've heard, most people are pretty impressed with the camera, for what it is. Basically the only compact digital camera that doesn't have a tiny tiny image sensor.

IQ wise the Sigma DP1 is in a class of its own among the compact digitals, and actually being as good as some consumer dslr. A stunning compact IQ machine with some quirks. It's lens is excellent, sharp corner to corner, no noticeble distortion. Sean Reid's recent review is a great read and provides a fair and balanced view of the strength and weaknesses of the DP1.
It is a camera which grows on you, defiintely not a replacement for granny's P&S. But once you are familiar with it, except for the sluggish AF and to long wait until you can take the next shot (I do not think the writing speed is the real issue, but rather the lack of a buffer), none of the other "waeknesses" heatedly debated by many non users/owners, I consider limiting or bothering.
With zone focusing and MF it is actually a decent street shooter (literally no shutter lag), except for the wait to get the next shot. If IQ matters most and portability is high on the importance list, this is the one to get.
I love mine and use it to travel really light or to complement the M8 (I'm even considering selling my 21mm lens and use the DP1 instead) and think its worth every cent.

Yes, the lens is superb, and in decent light, so is the sensor. It's the other stuff that bothers people. I like it though!

The lens is maximum f4 right?

Yes that's right

That's unfortunate. Is it possible to bring out detail in highly underexposed files in post processing with digital? Digital is more like slide right? Err on the side of underexposure. I think I saw somewhere that the DP-1 has a pretty low top ISO too.

I have it. The camera itself is pretty crude but the sensor and lens are tops. I only use manual focus and the focus wheel is why I ultimately bought it over the GRD II.

Max iso is 800 and perfectly usable. At iso 400 it shows substantially less noise than eg a GRDII at 200. I think Carl Ritterfalk did some tests with underexposing -2 to then pull up details in PP with pretty good results (see his web page).

The problem for me is the 28mm lens, theres talk of another version with a 40mm equiv. lens later in the year. But then talk is cheap.

The lens construction of 2 elements in 1 group provides correction for colour aberration and distortion and delivers a high level of optical performance."
they are starting to bring out some lenses apparently.

chill guys...i was talking about folks not happy with the f4 max aperture of the lens. also the build quality is nothing special. still looking forward to folks posting samples here. i am much interested in a nice compact instead of a dslr.

You obviously do not own a DP1. But have you ever held on in your hands. Just wondering what your "build quality' statement is based on. But I guess It is as well founded as your expert verdict on the lens.

I've had mine for almost two weeks. It's decent enough, but I don't seem to use it that much - f/4 and 28mm FOV is limiting for what I normally do. I'll give it another month or so, I might warm up to it over the summer.

Some new DP1 street pics on my flickr (see sig) if anyone cares to take a look. With the sounds turned off it's completely silent...nobody notices...you can practically conceal it in your hand. Great fun!
