http://aki-asahi.com/store/ have higher satisfaction rates than C-leather apparently, much quicker and well packaged with care, for Leica M's, but I don't know about R-D1...
I just sent an email to ask them, as I need my camera to be "refreshed" as well

Morgan and Cameraleather aren't at all bad. If the cover is standard fare it'll be in the post pretty quickly, if its a bit special/peculiar you may have to wait a while. The quality (at least on mine, and confirmed by others) is good. The R-D1 has one rather "big" design fault, and that is the SD card door swinging back under the front cover, meaning the it will loosen, sooner or later. But hey, by then I'll be drooling over a red cover instead.

Thanks for the tip on the battery door issue Erik. I will have an eye on that, when my camera leather arrives.
I might get another variety of different leathers from other vendors too. This kind of reminds me on the cult about handmade leather straps on Panerai watches. Once you have worn and learned to like one very much, there is this urge of trying something different ;-) I have heard about people ending up with dozens of different straps for just one watch ;-) Too bad, you have to glue the leather every time.

I'm going to do mine soon, too. What's the name of this covering? Being thinner than the rubber does it show lumps/bumps? it looks great.

No bumps, very smooth. But I didn't replace the rear thumb grip. Looks and feels just as nice as it does in the photo

I'm guessing the 'dry' application method is OK with this camera, given it's easy shape?

Anyone have a photo of an R-D1, or another black camera, with a tan/brown/natural covering?

I did the black griptac also. Yeah it doesn't need to be wet, sticks well. I took off my thumb grip and I dig it. That little bit of extra thinness is nice. If I need a better grip, I just jam my thumb under the winder.
Btw Doug, very cool that you got the R-D1. I've carried your little exposure chart around with me for years in my wallet. Just recently lost it

Need another? I think I can dig it up...
Yeah, I got the R-D1 as a stopgap to play with while I collected a few lenses for the Ricoh GXR M-mount, and in the meanwhile really started to dig shooting with it. I like the M-mount fine, but I'm trying ti figure out how to keep both.

I re-skinned mine last night. Looks great. It took me ages top remove the sticky black residue from the camera; the grips came off without any backing at all. I managed to get it all off with some hard work and the new grips went on like a dream.
