Hi folks,

I just stumbled over the 'news' on the Leica homepage :

Our lens manufacturing is based on a demand for high performance lenses that deliver the best possible picture in any given situation. To achieve this goal, in-depth knowledge of the properties of hundreds of types of glass, the effectiveness of complex coatings, precision manufacturing, and customised fine-tuning, is imperative.

It takes decades of experience to produce perfect image quality. This is nothing less than the basic requirement if the objective is to supply photographers with a tool capable of achieving picture results of unsurpassed crisp quality, colour brilliance, fullness of detail and richness of contrast.

Within this context, the brand new Summarit lens series certainly stands up to LEICA tradition, but at the same time - based on its many years of experience - the brand is defining a new standard: it is the uncompromising essence, evolution and contemporary interpretation of LEICA lens manufacturing, made in Germany.

By consistently reducing to fundamentals, the Summarit lenses allow photographers to achieve the most optimum results possible with modern, digital or analogue photography. In view of the ever more sensitive film materials and images sensors, the consistent starting aperture of f/2.5 and the adoption of an optimised, newly developed spherical design allow for the lens's compactness, while also ensuring excellent picture quality at an unusually good price-performance ratio.

With 35, 50, 75 and 90 millimetre focal lengths, the Summarit series covers the full spectrum of classic rangefinder photography, from the word go. They are, of course, 6-bit encoded for optimised usage with the Leica M8 but, true to the Leica tradition, they are designed to reveal their full potential with all M cameras from the Leica M3 onwards. High-quality solid metal sun hoods are available as accessories. All Summarit-M lenses are shipped in velour pouches, with metal lens caps for the front and back.
Deliveries of Leica Summarit-M lenses are scheduled to begin at the end of November 2007.

I couldn't download the performance proof examples (would have taken >2hrs here at work ;-) and technical data is rather limited.
Since no pricing indication other then "unusually good price performance ratio" everything is speculation if this is a necessary alternative to Z-M or CV. We will soon see some tests from Erwin, I guess.

Not only were these lenses announced months ago, but you're straight up ripping text and pictures directly from the Leica site...

Hi Erik,
sorry if this is an old hat. Obviously it seems to be, since very little reply....
It was new to me and I searched the forum for "summarit" and nothing related to this new range showed up. Besides any problems with quoting from other sites with clearly indicating the source and putting "[" at the start and "]" at the end ?

Thanks Icebear,
I was looking at those on the Leica site yesterday. Can't wait to check out the 90mm once it's released.

Dale Labs in Holywood, FL will be hosting a Leica Demo Day and Leica reps will be on hand with the new Summarits in tow. I believe Nov. 3, 2007 is the date. I am keenly interested in the 90 as well.
