[New test photos released] Leica Summicron 35/2 Eight Element copy made in China

ordered one too. probably gonna take a while. The newer lenses seem to have better finished than the prototype. More power to Mr.zhou to perfect their techniques.
Really dig the choice of customizing the ring though that might backfire for resale...

I believe that was the intent of the customization.

Wouldn’t the customized engraving have the opposite effect? This lens is going to become a collector’s item because it’s historically important, low production (500), and unique (flint glass). The engraving is evidence of its provenance.

I hope they publish info about this production run! Serial number, engraving, finish, batch, etc.

Kevin, when I decided I needed a hood for the 35/1.8 Nikkor LTM Tom had been sold out for I think several years. However, he found one around his apartment! It was quite pricey, but probably not what one might pay today if one turned up. Someone should make another batch of these, and the ones for the f/1.1 too.

I have the original shade, in mint condition, but I never use it. I have bought a simple 48mm shade in China on eBay for $3 that works just fine. I put a 57mm lens cap on the shade when the lens is not in use (most of the time) so the lens is well protected. I have the original cap for the lens, but I do not use that either. I'm too afraid of losing it.

Erik.

Hi everyone, jumping in late to the thread, but Kevin, I sent an email to you regarding the second batch.

Everyone's photos from the replica look great. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the thread thus far

I am using the 48mm thread; by turning the shade I can choose the f-stop.

Erik.

Eric and Raid, you're talking about the 3.5/1.8 in S mount. The LTM version only has a 43mm thread. The original hood for that is rectangular and very rare. I have only seen 1 sold, a few years ago on eBay and I think it made around $1000.

I can do without the shade.

Erik.

Presumably that's also what buyers of the lens when it was new also thought, which is why there are so few of them. The lens had a production run of 1000 - 1500, so the numbers for the shade would perhaps have been in the hundreds. Factor in losses over the 60 something years since they were made, and it's no wonder they're rare.

Also, this shade is a big ugly thing, unlike the Nikkor 3.5/1.8 S mount shade, which might also have persuaded customers not to bother with it.

All that said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I would love to own one. But it's not going to happen, unless one comes along at a sensible price.
