[New test photos released] Leica Summicron 35/2 Eight Element copy made in China

Are these being sold yet or still just giving it to people to test?

jsrockit, I'm not sure if I understood correctly. This is what i know. Apart from a few 'test' lenses, people are receiving lenses they ordered from the first series run. That series of 500 lenses was sold out by the middle of December 2019 and is now in production.
If you participated in that order and received confirmation (in Dec), those lenses are being made, and people are being contacted individually as their number comes up. If not, then you must wait until the second series (this time with non-flint glass) is announced to pre-order.

So nobody has yet signed up for the second batch of lenses. As long as lenses are currently being sent out, there is hope that this project will be continued successfully. It is a unique experience to be able to use a true replica of a Leica lens.

The 50mm lens gives a 67mm view on the M*, with the 1.33 crop factor. Right?

I can understand your wish to use one camera and two lenses. I have a Leica lens that fits both the 35mm and 50mm Summicron lenses. Dark corners may be present, as you have said.
I have several Leica lens hoods. This is one of them.

Yes, I have this one too, it fits both lenses, it is a very good lens hood. But it is too big when you use two lenses. When you change the lens on the camera you can put a lens cap on the rear an then, with the hood mounted, you can put it in your bag, but how do you close the front of the lens hood? That is not possible, so there will be a lot of dust on your front lens. You can take the hood off and close the lens with a lens cap, but this will take some time. And were do you put the hood? In the bag it will damage cameras and lenses. You will need a pocket for it.

I very much like the lenshood/lens cap system of the Contax G. Something like that for Leica M would be great.

Erik.

I see what you mean, Erik. Having each lens safely covered with a lens cap is needed. I have the beach and the sand here!

Did you receive a separate confirmation, besides the confirmation of the google form process?

Maarten, I submitted my order 5 or 6 days after Raid (in Dec), so I have not yet received notice that my lens is in production.

Erik, Your photo is a benchmark for me. Although I began to get an inkling of the possibilities of the lens with several of Steve York's photos. When I saw your print I finally know what the real possibilities for silver gelatin work can be. This may very well become my standard everyday 35mm on the Leica.

The brass version may be delayed, I think. I switched to a black lens to get my lens earlier.

Good luck with your lens order.

Thank you Raid. I am on for a black lens (from the start).

Yes, this pic is on full aperture (no sharpening), I also have shots stopped down. Incredible! I will print one tonight.

Such a fine lens shines when making large prints (I think).
I used to order 16x24 and 20x30 prints from MF transparencies (6x6, 6x7, 6x9). The details were awesome.
This lens is obviously not a MF lens for larger sized film, but it is a larger challenge for 35mm lenses to show great details in film.

I‘M just out of the loop... I haven’t done anything. Just wondering where you can order when they are available again. This thread has 59 pages... I’m too lazy to go through it all for pricing and ordering info. 🙂

The first batch of 500 lenses has been ordered by people several months ago.
Wait for the announcement for the second batch of lenses.
People are watching this thread on a regular basis, even if it is time consuming.
Nobody wants to miss the chance to get a lens.

Raid, Although I've seen big 35mm prints in museums and galleries, and printed big when i did exclusively 35mm (25+ years ago), I personally don't print 35mm larger than 11"x14." Regardless of lens quality, I don't care for the look.
I tend to start from the desired finished product. If I am thinking of a big print, I'll use medium or large format to start with. Although I've sold 16x20 and 20x24 prints from 35mm, I no longer do that. Unless it's chance, or I have some other constraint, I tend not to do landscapes for example in 35mm. Others may of course feel differently about it.

To be fair, we put our names on a list 6 months ago. No money changed hands at that point. I paid for the lens 10 days ago and should have it early July.

Shawn

Shawn, no reflection on fairness in my comment at all. Yes we all put our hands up for a chance to order the lens. & it's great to see them reaching people and hear about the production lens quality, which is astonishing.
