[New test photos released] Leica Summicron 35/2 Eight Element copy made in China

I can see scores of them are for sale and have been sold on Ebay..
They are pumping them out like hamburgers lol..
One dealer already sold 22 of them
..
Basically it looks like they are giving us the wholesale price on them or close..

It does seem as if Kevin gives the QC checks that these other samples are likely going without. Something to be said for that. When did the Chinese New Year celebrations come to an end?

The Leica 35 Summaron ƒ/2.8 redux is imminent and should take some of the demand off the LLL. According to Erwin Puts, for the loss of a stop this lens was even sharper than the Summicron at f/2.8, FWIW.

According to a lens test report back in the day (circa 1967), from Camera magazine, that tested all of Leica wides, both M & R, the Summicron actually rated a bit better than the Summaron, at least at the edges at just about every stop. At f/2.8 the edge testing was 68 llm for the Summicron and 48 llm for the Summaron. Testing on center was the same (80 llm). Take all that stuff with a grain of salt, and if Putts says otherwise, or Ken Rockwell, or any of the other guys on the internet, they must be correct. After all, they have websites that prove their points.🙂

I suspect to my eye they're pretty equal. Sometimes I have trouble seeing the marginal "improvements" that others note.

In my non-expert opinion, the use of English grammar and punctuation changes over time. These rules are often used to exclude people. Those in the know are in and those who don't are out. Not very different from the use of 'proper' table manners:

I remember official dinners where certain invitees, from countries I will not mention but take a wild guess, would try to use a fish knife to cut meat and drank lemon-flavored water out of hand washing bowls. It didn't make them stupid. They just did not know.

As a father of a teenaged daughter, I've learned that she is using different grammar and punctuation rules depending on which platform she operates on: the Queen's English for school projects and an entirely different language for online use.

Cheers, OtL

You're wrong here. Punctuation and grammar do matter, and excluding the uneducated from certain places makes society work better.

Here's an example: A panda bear goes into a restaurant and orders lunch. He reads a book while eating; and after he finishes his food, he pulls out a gun and starts shooting everyone there. When he runs out of ammo, he starts to leave. The waiter, who was hiding behind the counter, asks the panda "Why did you do that?" The panda leaves his book on the table and tells the waiter that the answer is in there.

The book is about wildlife; and the panda was reading the chapter about his own species, which he left open for the waiter. The waiter reads:

"Giant Panda. A large animal native to China. Eats, Shoots, and Leaves."

See what a difference that two misplaced commas made?

As a fan of grammar and punctuation I'm curious why you end your sentences with a double period? Example (..). Is this something that everyone does and I'm ignorant of?
I dont know why either..
I just do since the internet and e-mail was invented..

Like you said, differences are likely marginal. The Summaron will come optimized for digital, with modern coatings and a full Leica warranty; one suspects the selling price will approximate the 28 Summaron.

So, buy LLL (prices are at $1500+) and take your chances or get a Leica with a real warranty. At $500, it's a fun lark. At $1500 and no warranty, not so much.

Reeaaaally reaching on that one. In that case the problem isn't the grammar, it's the psychotic panda that read in a book it should kill, so it immediately does.

Your crazy example reminds me of the "and that's why you should always leave a note" scenes in Arrested Development 😛

I was told by Eric..the manager at Stan Tamarkin Leica back in the day..that the 35 Summicron was better overall..than the 2.8 Summaron..and that the QC was better for the Summicron as well...in other words..you had to go thru a bunch of Summarons to get a really good one..
That was back when no one wanted Summarons even at $195 per lens...
I didnt want one either after hearing that and just bought the Summicron 4.

Such considerations are not applicable to Leica's re-release of the Summaron.

I'm a former high school English teacher. That story is commonly used in schools to illustrate the importance of grammar.

"Eats, Shoots & Leaves" is a text book example of punctuation from Lynne Truss's book "Eats, Shoots & Leaves".

Thank you, Chris, for sharing that.

All the best,
Mike

Yep. We used it when I was teaching; the kids found the story humorous and it showed in a pretty extreme fashion why grammar is important.

I did get an email from Kevin last week assuring me that he is working through the lenses, examining them but he is also very busy with work at the moment.

There's a post from David Chen on Leica Classified on FB where he is now accepting pre-orders for the lens. One comment on the post asked about RFF lenses not all being delivered to everyone. His reply was "wait you still Havnt get your orders? Please DM me". Do what you will with this information.

For those waiting on a pre-ordered lens from the first batch from Kevin, Kevin did inform me a couple days ago by email that he has the lenses and is sorting through them. He had been delayed due to his business. Hopefully for those who ordered but still waiting the lenses will be coming soon.

So it seems there are quite some people right now that have paid for this lens, and are still awaiting (3-4 months) for delivery, and Kevin is not answering emails. At least not to all of us, but only to some of us. With no clear answer on when we are going to get them. To be honest, you can be busy with work and have all the lenses, and have to test them, but 3-4 months sounds a bit weird to me.

So my question, who has paid, and has not yet received anything?

I'll kick off (yes, I pulled out, but changed my mind):

- Maarten (2 lenses)

I have also paid on the 19th of December 2020 and have only gotten one E-Mail after the payment confirmation to just wait for him. I'm starting to feel a bit uneasy - it's been over 3 months and no update, no lens. I'm sure he's busy, but I find it quite odd to request payment and not send the lens for over 3 months. Fingers crossed that all goes well...
