New to Developing Film : Need input

Some facets of my home developing include:

One thing I like to use is a plastic clothes hanger with the clips on it. I just hang that up on the curtain rod in the bathroom, and I use plastic clothes pins to weigh down the negs (and a couple of more on the other side of the hanger to balance things out).

I also use an ipod for a timer.

I don't use a stop bath. Just water.

I also just use distilled water for the final rinse. I just shake the negs a bit before hanging them.

I've been using HC110. It's kind of frustrating as my results have been inconsistent I think, and I think I may go back to D76 eventually. I also use Rodinal which is good.

I've now developed three films in as many days, and I've learned this:
Yes, it's true - DO NOT WIPE THE NEGS! Ruined my very best set :( (You know, of the three horrible ones I've developed :)
The Massive Dev Chart iPhone app rocks!
Use a rag when you mix chemicals, so much easier to clean up during than after.

And most important: The pictures won't look as good as you think they will at first... Maybe later though :)

Just remember, James Nactwey would process his Tri-X film in various sketchy places, sometimes with no fancy washing aids, pins, timers, etc... not even a thermometer sometimes. His prints are still amazing.

Hey there
You'll get plenty of responses for developers. That's because there's lots of choices, they all basically develop negatives -- the difference comes in what you like, and your personal taste.
And that takes time to develop.

Don't sweat it. Pick a good 'safe' developer, get to know it and then see how you feel.

Ilfosol 3 will work just fine with Delta film. So does D-76 (stock or 1:1) or DD-X or even good old Rodinal.

I use Rodinal for almost everything, simply because I love the extra acutance, slight grit to the grain and the fact that it lasts FOREVER after you open the bottle. Very cheap developer and a bottle lasts forever...between the tiny dilutions and the long post-opening life, it's a wonder I ever buy a new bottle at all.
Seriously, even once it turns colour completely, it still works fine.

Anyway, that's MY experience...gained over time. Your mileage may vary.

Thanks for all of the help and input. It was very useful.

I just placed my order for all of my stuff, so with any luck, Ill get everything by this weekend, and will be developing my first rolls.
