New to me F2

The bottom line is the AS head was the best Nikon offered for the F2, with the DE1 head being the entry level budget one.

Was it? Hereabouts, at least 75% of F2's sold as DP-1/DP-11 camera kits, and almost all the rest were F2S/SB/AS. The former usually had a street price below the a body with DE-1 (which barely a dealer did have in stock). The rare DE-1 or DW-1 combinations were either bought by collectors or by institutional/governmental users.

IMO the F2 with Photomic meter finder is the iconic Nikon F2, and looks best.
Further all F2 Photomic finders add full exposure information in the viewfinder.

I agree! I may be biased however:

In response to Larry's question, I have an F, F2 with plain prism, and F2A. They all appear identical in brightness, as they all use the same screens.

The F2 really is quite nice. And is definitely a step up from the F (I have a couple of those too).

Here with my DP-12 head alongside it:

I have an AS head as well and see no difference in brightness, I do however feel the weight difference quite clearly and despite Sover having installed one of those ceramic resistor rings I rarely fit it for use outside. Interesting that the black plain and the AS probably now sell for about the same, not checked just speculating.
Biggest improvement for me is the long release which I curiously didn't fit for the shot, I think at the time I was sharing around the rangefinders, I have more now so everyone gets their own.

I bought two, the second to get a plain prism. Then I got a waist level finder.

The first one came with the DE1 head which had CDS cells, really old tech. Maybe someday get one with LED and silicone blue cells. I might put up with the ugly metered head to get the modern tech.

I won a F2 AS in a competition which i regret selling to fund my 28mm 2.8 LTM. Im on the hunt seeing if i can trade it for a F2 or a pentax LX because there both amazing cameras

Huhhh?
DE-1 has no meter, you must mean the DP-1 (the standard photomic finder that sold with the Nikon F2.) Yes, it has CDS cells, and Sover Wong can replace them with his custom made CDS cells as part of his overhaul.

Later Photomic heads had better cells than CDS...
