This seems to be common with the Nikon Rangefinders.

I have a S3 and it had a gummed up focusing as well, I cleaned it out with lighter
fluid, I did put in extra light oil and it was just as bad, so I took it apart cleaned
it and left it as is no oil and it's very smooth, so be careful.

Yes, Lucas noted the lead in gasoline is a lubricant when I used to service those for DFV's at Cosworth long ago. You can still buy leaded gasoline - it's called "110LL" (low-lead) aviation gasoline. Most aero clubs will happily sell you a few gallons...
