New to TLR ...

... I received my first TLR ever today, a Rolleiflex 3.5E. I bought it from Koh's camera following the thread started by Kyle. It's really a nice camera ! I was astonished about how bright the screen is, expected a much dimmer screen. So far, everything seems to work fine, even the meter still works and gives same values as my Gossen Digisix.

Loaded the first roll of film (Tri-X) and hope to get some photos tonight 🙂

I've only had my 3.5 Tessar for a few weeks but I already find it hard to think in any format other than 6x6 🙂

They're great cameras, enjoy it.

Congrats on your new acquisition! I think you're going to have a lot of fun shooting this alongside with your Leicas. I began with an old Rolleiflex Automat X a few weeks back myself. It's almost constantly with me when I'm out and about. Enjoy!

I find it hard to think in any format other than 35mm. It's a learning curve. I have one roll total and part of another shot, but I'm not hurrying with the second.

It's hard for me to get a good composition in the vertical inverted viewfinder. I thought I had a "winner" on one, but I totally missed a stupid yellow sign that blocked part of the building I was shooting. 🙁 I also need to concentrate more on my verticals.

The one I have (Yashica D) doesn't have any kind of idiot-proof double exposure prevention. After my first shot with the TLR (the obligatory self-portrait in the mirror) I did not wind, and spaced it off and shot over it. (My avatar as of May 30 shows this shot.) 🙁

It is quite a learning curve. I do want to experiment more with different subjects, but as of this minute and second I most definitely prefer the 35mm format.

Develop a habit of the last thing after focus and composition is wind. Or, after every shot, wind. The later is what I do with my folders, but granted that doesn't cock the shutter. Before you protest about the former, remember, that is what you do with your 35mm cameras.

After I saw those big negatives the first time I used a TLR, that was my preference. But I didn't give up on what I liked about my 35mm system, namely interchangable lenses and diversity of film types. Still, I do understand your dismay at not immediately mastering some of the quirks of TLRs. It is as you said, a learning curve. And if you are like me, it can be a long one. 😀

Another reason, besides the bigger negative, why I prefer my Super Press 23 I guess.

I took my Yashicamat 124g out for a field trip in Los Angeles yesterday...actually I was working downtown and when I finished I went for a walk...I shot two rolls of Tmax 400 and two rolls of Fuji Neopan 400...They were developed last night and might get printed today or tomorrow.
The problem I have in using this type of camera (TLR) is this...I compose the shot that I want and shoot...forgetting that the image is reversed in the viewfinder...I'm liking what I'm seeing but then it all looks different when I see the image on film...
This is the first time using the Neopan 400 and so far I like the look of the neg...will see how it prints...should be nice!!!
