Multiple posters on Rangefinder Forum have suggested the new Voigtlander 21mm P is in form and optics the same lens as the old 21mm Skopar, though with better ergonomics.

My question is what is ergonomically superior about this new lens? Certainly the price increase makes it less attractive than the old version.
 
Main thing is that it doesn't require a screwmount adapter. The focus ring looks a little fatter which may help, as may the ears on the aperture ring, but tbh I like neither. The little screw-in focus lever is fine and with a lens that wide it generally finds itself welded @ f/8 so its not like I ever need to bother the aperture in a hurry. I guess the other bonus is that you don't have to buy the 21mm finder which is semi-useless on the R-D1 (unless you also happen to have the 15mm Heliar).
Given the recent Zeiss price cuts Voigtlander need to be careful with their price point. I think the whole M-mount/no finder thing is there to appeal to casual M8 shooters (if there is such a bunch).

1 I agree about the Zeiss competion.

2 I think this lens is a 'natural' for Voigtlander R4, in the same way as the 40mm is a 'natural' for Voigtlander R3.

Zeiss Price Cut?

I thought the Zeiss 21mm 2.8 was more than double the price of a Voigtlander 21mm P 4.0. Will the price significantly change on this lens?
 
Zeiss announced price cuts this week. Popflash have them for $887 now. Not exactly cheap, and still more than double the price of the skopar but its faster and (arguably) better.
 
Wait until all the 21mm screw thread are 2nd user, then the supply and demand will come into effect.

At $887, the Zeiss 21mm 2.8 is tempting, though you have to add another $65 for the lens shade, considering the CV 21mm includes a shade in its price. Unless another company makes a cheaper lens shade for the Zeiss, the price moves up to $952. Still under the scary thousand mark but not by much.
