Voigtlander's new smaller, lighter NOKTON 35mm F1.2 Aspherical III Leica M mount lens provides better optical performance compared to the previous already outstanding Version II. Amazingly Version III is approximately 20% shorter (50.5mm), and about 30% lighter (332g) while also offering better optical performance!
Compared to other super fast 35mm mirrorless lenses, our new V3 is less than half the length and one third the weight!

This size and weight reduction combined with great wide open performance was brought about by a rethinking of design criteria with four aspheric surfaces in two aspheric elements, 9 elements in 7 groups.

I'll be very interested to see how this lens performs against the V1 and V2. I have a V1 and the coma and fringing are sometimes a bit unsettling. If that's cleared up, I'd be interested in this lens. But other than that, this lens is the only f1.2 35 in town for M mount.

It is basically same as Leica FLE, size and weight, but 1.2 instead of nothing fancy 1.4 🙂.
Its reasonable size and weight gives my M-E 220 second chance. Priced normally, without status add-ons.

As we are under shelter in place order, the natural first subject was the cat. 🙂

This is wide open on X-T3, shot closer than the official minimum focus distance using a helicoid adapter.

This is awfully temptimg.
There is one thing though that from my experience drives me nuts in this otherwise great line of lenses: the lack of indication/stop at 0.7m.
With a classic RF I find this to be a pain when focusing really closely.
I wonder if the lens could be modified, to stop focusing at 0.7?

Here are some more snaps. They are all with X-T3 so 52mm eFOV. No crop, JPEG with slight adjustments to taste but no vignetting or CA adjustment. All at F1.2. Full frame (Film) pics gotta wait till I develop a roll.

Very much manageable size on film M. Feels great in hands.

This is representative of finder protrusion. I don't think I'll have any issue in real use, at least without the hood (not planning to add it).


Quick observation
- Construction and actions are superb. Best Voigtlander I've personally handled. Rivals Leica no problem.
- Medium contrast makes post processing easy and I'm hoping I can get benefit of that on film as well.
- For example, the dark part of the black cat photo retains tonality if you crank up the brightness.
- Of course works great on M body, but I think it's fantastic for mirrorless bodies especially with helicoid adaptor to get even closer.

Some of my thoughts, 2 days into using this compelling lens:


It's really nicely sharp across the frame, particularly so when stopping down to 2.8 or more

Like the CV 21mm f/1.4, this one does vignette, but overall, it works for most of my images and probably would correct well with in-camera profiles.

Colors pop. The lens' color reproduction, via its coatings, is similar to how a Leica lens would put out color

At close focus (0.5), the out of focus (bokeh) elements start to swirl

At close focus (0.5-0.7m), there's a bit of glow (blooming), that is less noticeable once you get past 0.7m. This works well for some circumstances (forgiving portraiture), maybe less so in other instances

By f/2, the lens renders quite sharply, and by f/2.8-4, it's bitingly sharp on both the M10-D and M9M (my two test cameras)

I think there is a slight bit of pincushion vs complex distortion, but it's not noticeable other than when shooting brick walls or very geometric regions

Out of focus reminds me a LOT of the CV 50mm f/1.2 and CV 40mm f/1.2 Asph lenses. I can see why these 3 lenses would form a family. They render very similarly across focal lengths and would make a great set. I hope Voigtlander eventually updates their 28mm lenses to add one more to this family

Build quality and function are outstanding. The lens is confidently built, and it is a joy to use.

My only portrait subjects at this moment are my wife, kid, and myself. Given out social distancing measures, other people will have to wait. And I can only shoot so much of my wife and kid without them getting really annoyed hahaha

I really like this lens. It's quite different than the 35 mm f/1.4 Summilux Asph FLE in its rendering properties at f/1.4, but I'd imagine that by f/2.8, you would see no difference in how the lenses render. The Leica has a bit more of a 3D pop, while the Voigtlander is more forgiving and gentle below f/2.8...as others have noted, it has more of a Mandler look (80's/90's) to it than a Karbe look, if you had to put it into those terms. The lens it most reminds me of is the 35mm f/1.4 Summilux Asph (pre-FLE), which was a Mandler design (but suffered from focus shift). From what I can tell, this one does not suffer that same issue, opens up 1/2 extra stop, and is wonderful as an all purpose option for those of you wishing to spend a little less on lenses in M mount.

Another FANTASTIC job by Voigtlander put out a relevant, competent, pleasing lens for M mount and mirrorless shooters. FYI am am really enjoying this lens on both the M10-D and M9M.
