Does anyone know whether the vulcanite covering offered under the " Leica a la carte program" is the same material as was used on the original M3/M4 etc ? It seems to me to be far shinier and less easy to grip than the vulcanite on my M3 but perhaps this is because it has not had so much use.

The one to avoid is the covering on my MP. It has so little texture that it feels slippery, not at all secure in the hand. I solved this problem by putting mine in a Luigi case. I don't know what got into them to use that particular covering.

I have an MP3 and I believe it has the same covering as yours. It is not the same as the original vulcanite but the "look" of it is the same, i.e. it has the same (or extremely similar) surface stippling. It is easier to grip than the surface that comes on the regular MP, that's for sure.
