'' New '' Weston V Meter ?

I love using Classic Cameras , and selenium meters .
[ As new 1979 Leningrad 4 now matches 1979 Kiev 4a , all UK . ]
I have found that I can get a Weston V totally refurbed with new cell / mech / calibrated in UK for £66 .
The body , I can find on e-bay for about £5.00 .
[ I don't want to alter the originality of my ex-Dad's Weston V wich I used in the 70s ]
Some have advised a modern meter , but the entire Classic Leica / Contax and clones experience is about using older equipment [ I have an ugly ,
but accurate , Jessop plastic meter [ Vivitar ? clone ] but it's not
good to use .
I guess a CV meter would be far more precise and fit on the access shoe , but I like the selenium ones .
Would anyone consider this ?

Absolutely yes.

A refurbished Weston will be plenty accurate and a joy to use.

I would choose this any day over a modern meter accurate to a tenth of a f stop or something.

Is a Weston V the same as a Weston EuroMaster? I have a feeling that the EuroMaster is the more recent and has a feature (can't remember what) which may be useful. They all seem to be the same price anyway. Although if the V is the one with memories for you then go with the V.

I bought a Seconic 308 for use with my M3 but for some reason am always tempted by the Weston.Don`t know why because ,unless you have been using one for years as some have ,they do not appear to be as easy to use as the modern meters.
Still you have to take note of those who do still use them and they seem to think that they are among the best.

I think the V and EuroMaster are almost the same, but I too can't remember the difference. Quality Light and Metric in Los Angeles, CA is the default place for light meter repair, especially Westons.

IIRC, the difference is asa range, BICBW - I have two V's and use them with my LTM gear when I want accurate results.

Have you tried Megatron for a repair quote?

I have a Weston Master IV and I chose that model simply for its larger scales - easier for my old eyes! Once thing to beware of on the later Masters - don't leave it stored with the reading locked. If you do, the needle tends to stick to the scale and needs partial dismantling to unstick!

Yes, £66 is a bargain for a meter of that quality. I'm half inclined to have one of mine rebuilt!

The V is the all-time classic for usefulness, the III for looks and reliability, but as far as I recall the III was Weston speeds, not ASA/ISO. I had a new Euro-Master but didn't like it as well as the V: can't remember why, now, and it would take a while to dig out all my old, duff Westons. Only the IIIs still work!

I like using my Weston V with meterless cameras - the invercone is very useful, and the meter accurate enough (disagrees with camera meters in artificial light though). Sometimes the low light scale doesn't pop up on mine, usually cured by a flick. I've not had any problems with sticky needles. Leave the meter case at home, it just gets in the way.

Still, much as I like my Weston, I wouldn't mind a Luna-Pro for low light.

The repair quote was from the Megatron website , less if the mechanics are OK , but I would much prefer evrything to be replaced .

I have a Weston II, IV, and V, each serviced by Quality Light Metric. For me, the IV is the clear winner in terms of usability, as the scales are easy to read quickly. All are wonderful meters.

I have two of the Weston Master V model and recently sent both to Quality Light Metric to refurbish. They came back looking and acting like new. and all the way up and down the scales they both matched one another's reading to perfection. I don't much worry about whether or not they have a period look to them. I like them because they're easy to use, extremely accurate, and very reliable. The fact that they don't require batteries is a big plus! I mostly use them as incident meters with the Invercone.
