Hi,

I know the following question is not a rangefinder question, but maybe somebody can help me. Which of the New York Subwaylines is an elevated line (hope elevated means above ground level)? Or which part of which line?

Don't know how to find out. I'll surprisingly be at sunday in NY 🙂, and would like to take some images there (what else ;-).

Thanks
rudi

The F train is elevated for a few stops as it travels through Brooklyn to Coney Island. As is the D train. None of the subway lines are elevated in Manhattan proper. The 7 train is elevated as it goes through Queens as well.

Thank You Keith. Is there one of those above a road left, or went they all underground (Doesn't have to be in manhatten)?

I like your 'Building_Tops' they are nice.

please remember, that if memory serves correctly, theoretically photography is not allowed on the NY subway.

Also from outside?
Maybe I try the stupid tourist number 🙂.

Also, 4 train is elevated in Bronx starting at Yankee Stadium.

NY MTA has "proposed" the ban of photography, but it's not a law yet. I take pictures almost daily during my commute, has not run into problems so far.

You could try the MTA website. The elevateds do travel above streets themsleves. There is the 5 train that is elevated on its way to the Bronx. It bypasses buildings that are close. It's not like those old film noir movies where the trains pass by apartment windows! It does, but it's not that close.

The 7 train stays above ground all the way to its end after it leaves Manhattan.

If I recall correctly, and it's been awhile, the Broadway line comes above ground somewhere near 125th Street. To be sure, there's at least one line above ground in the Bronx. Checking the MTA site is a good idea. My subway pictures from 1992 - 1994 can be found in the "other projects" section of my site, http://www.still-photo.net I can't give a direct link to the page because it's a flash site.

Rudi,

I hope NYPD or MTA have better things to do than arresting tourists snaping pictures. Imagine the headlines on the tabloids... 🙂

I'm sure you'll have a great time here in NYC.

The N and Q run over the Manhattan Bridge before dipping back underground. The F is elevated for a bit after Smith & 9th in Brooklyn. The Metro North train is above ground after coming out of Grand Central and the view is quite nice through Harlem. You could take it for a short way into the Bronx and return.

www.forgotten-ny.com has all sorts of interesting infomation about the city--old subway lines, history of public transit, old street names, etc. good stuff...

For more information, go to http://www.nycsubway.org/

(You may notice a familiar name scattered about the photo credits in a few places.) 🙂

I'll summarize quickly a few good ones.

The Culver (F) line in Brooklyn is elevated most of the way and a good vantage point is Smith/9th. It rides the original Culver El from Ditmas to Coney Island. Much history there.

Flushing line is elevated from the Queens end of the Steinway tunnel almost all the way to downtown Flushing. Lotsa urban scenery. Lotsa history regarding renaming of Queens streets if you're into urban trivia. 🙂

The BMT Broadway/Jamaica is elevated from the Manhattan side of the "Willie B" almost until Jamaica where it connects to the new Archer tunnel. It does pass over some dicey areas though. The Canarsie line (L) is el and surface from Broadway Junction to Rockaway Parkway. Also in the same general area the Fulton/Rockaway line "Take The A Train" is elevated from Euclid (or so) on to all 3 terminii.

The west side IRT (1 I think) passes over the Manhattan Valley viaduct and is el on the far side too. Almost everything in The Bronx except for the Concourse line is el.

Oh. as of now, they tell me (the ubiquitous "they") that the photo ban is not final, but IANAL. 🙂

Have fun! (RIP Thunderbolt. Long live Cyclone.) 🙂

Good time ... yes, because there are no kidz/wife around me 🙂 ... the bad thing is, that my company gave me just one spare day to have a bit sightseeing.

I wouldn't take chances with the transit police. Tourist or not, why would it matter? If they are not around, take some photos, but ban or not, I would not take any images with the transit police in site. They have a lot more to be aware of these days and can get pretty surly.

The Transit police are part of the NYC Police Dept. and wear the same dark blue uniforms. In the summer they will probably be in shirtsleeves. Most of them pack Glocks, but they won't shoot you for taking a picture.
The B train Brooklyn bound emerges at (9th Ave, Brooklyn) and goes all the way to Coney Island elevated. The line to Brighton Beach ( I believe it is the Q) which is the eastern part of Coney Island is also elevated once it reaches Brooklyn all the way to the end of the line. Brighton Beach (where I was born) has become a Russian emigre enclave and has a nice boardwalk at the beach as well and might be a nice place to visit and grab a Russian lunch but the ride is long and will eat up much of your one free day. Enjoy your visit.

I got the maps from mta, now I've to find it. How far I can go at this 1,5 days depends on how tired I'm after the flights.

Thank You

Time was short ... the 7 was great, the F rotten but not really what I searched for.
Would like to spend a few more days, the rest of the week is working in NJ :-(.\

Thanks for all hints.
