Got a new Zeiss Ikon with the 50 Sonnar a week ago and just noticed that the lens mount ring shows already strong marks/scratches. The camera has hardly been used and besides the Sonnar, only two Leica lenses were mounted. I am quite surprised about my observation , since the mount rings of my M6 and M8 show no marks or signs of wear, although especially the M8 having been used quite extensively over the last 6 months.

I'm now reluctant to use the Sonnar on the Leica's since the issue could be with the lens itself or simply with inferior materials used for the ZI lens mount ring. Any similar experiences from other ZI or ZM lens owners?

Were there marks on the mounting ring when you got the camera? There should be no scratches or gouges.

I don't think so, and they are so visible, that I believe I would have noticed them had they been there. I have a suspicion that the culprit is the Sonnar's lens mount. The move metal on metal when turning the lens in the camera mount is not as silky and smooth as with any of my other lenses, on Ms. It feels and sounds as if there was a very slight friction between the metals of the camera ring and the lens. Also, the whole camera lens mount shows gauges i.e. a 360 degree circle.
