So I'm new to m4/3 and just got my Oly 17mm and I put it on my G1 body and it seems to be autofocusing by itself. As I move the cam around the lens continues to focus. I've never had a camera do this before. It doesn't do it with the Panny 14-42 or 45-200. Camera firmware is 1.4 and lens is 1.2. Any ideas about why this is happening and how to make it stop?

Thanks for any advice,

Jim

What focus mode is the camera set to? Check the switch on the top of the body to the left of the EVF hump. You may have it set to AFC (continuous auto focus). Set the switch ti AFS or MF.

Do you have the G1 on IA mode? If so, switch it to any other mode (P, or A, for example). In IA mode, the focus is set automatically to focus tracking, and it will drive you crazy.

Ok...I have the camera in hand. It's set to AFS, P, and single frame advance and it's still doing it. Is there a menu setting for focus tracking? I find it strange it only does it with this lens.

there is a dedicated button for AF mode. it's the left "cursor" button on the back of the G1 on the right of the LCD. Alternatively, press the quick menu button on the top next to the mode dial and scroll until you get to the AF mode menu.

I checked that and I have it set to "one area" mode.

Do you have another lens to try? Mounting another lens would isolate the problem to the Oly lens or the G1 body.

It had only done it with that lens but your post somehow triggered something in my brain that said: "test is with the other G1 body you bought moron...."

So I put it on our other G1 and it didn't do it. So I did a full reset on the problem body and it seems to have fixed it. I should have done that from the start as I purchased it used and no doubt the previous owner had some kind of custom setting thing ticked that I couldn't find. All seems to be well now.

Thanks to all for your help and suggestions!

my gf1 has the option to pre-focus a scene in order to increase focusing speed when you're ready to take a shot. might check to see if you have that turned on ..pg.2 of custom menu, "pre AF" option (that's the GF1 firmware, may be located slightly different on the G1).

Like I posted earlier a reset of the setting on the camera made it stop. It must be some hidden setting known only to those who can summon it through the MFT Rain Dance. :)
