Well, I have decided to buy an M7...(Thanks to all who advised me in my previous thread.

Next step....which lens? Summicron or Summilux (I am determined to buy new Leica glass!).

My cheapest option is a M7+50mm Summicron kit. I have also considered a 35mm Summicron instead.

With either of these focal lengths, I wanted some advice on the difference between the latest version of the Summiluxes vs Summicrons....

....I find the Summicrons appealing because of size. Are the Summiluxes so large that they block the viewfinder? If so, how much of the viewfinder? Is it to such an extent that the framelines are blocked (for either focal range)?

Secondly, at f2 do both versions of the 35mm and 50mm perform equally, so that the only difference is really the extra f stop? Do they perform equally throughout their aperture range?

Are the Summicrons more contrasty than the Summiluxes? Are both types as equally easy to focus?

Apologies for the newbie questions. 😱

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Used to have the Summicron 35/2 (Version IV) and the late tabbed Summicron 50mm. They are a perfect match, especially as both are tabbed, small and light. Contrast, resolution and colour reproducrion are almost impossible to tell apart. Bokeh on the 35mm is a bit better but the 50mm isn't bad either.

I offered them as perfect couple on that auction site as a buy-it-now offer and they sold for considerably more than I bought them for five years ago (Hadn't used the M for more than year, just SLRs, and decided to recollect the money).

hi!

as i'm at work, so not many time now.
I have the summicron 35 version IV and like it because of being small and compact, esp. with the shade on it. results are ok but i would prefer the zeiss biogon 35 in terms of picture quality. this is sharper from edge to edge compared to the preasph but is not so contrasty as the actual asph. cron. wonderful colors with slidefilm, but it is larger and has a chrome front ring which i do not like.
take a look at my flickr, some pics there with the 2/35 preasph at around 4-5,6

regards

EITHER ONE - DEPENDS ON IF YOU NEED THE EXTRA SPEED.

Secondly, at f2 do both versions of the 35mm and 50mm perform equally, so that the only difference is really the extra f stop? Do they perform equally throughout their aperture range?

THE 50 AND 35 ARE BOTH SUPER LENSES - AGAIN DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU NEED/SHOOT

Are the Summicrons more contrasty than the Summiluxes? Are both types as equally easy to focus?

YES, BUT NOT BY MUCH. IF YOU WANT THE ULTIMATE LENS, TRY THE 50MM ASPH 1.4
