I recently bought an R3A (and am loving it). I was curious about the supplemental viewfinders that are available....the kind that attach to the flash shoe. Do they function the same as the camera's built-in viewfinder, and allow you to focus? Or do the simply offer an additional set of brightlines?

They are separate finders with a different field of view that the built-in one. None of them have focusing capability; for focusing you have to use the built-in finder, which sounds more complicated than it is. Most of them have brightlines; some (notably the 12 and 15mm ones) don't, as the field is already quite big.
