is it just me, or has anyone else noticed a preponderance of people signing up here just to sell stuff?

not that I'm saying this is a bad thing, but it seems that we're gaining a reputation here as a place for people to 'dump' their unwanted RF gear.. I kinda liked this place when it was more about sharing info than selling things

Agree - but it beats people signing up just to load the gallery up with their crappy photos and never post except to say look at my crappy photos.

Oh man.. this is true.

I prefer a "community" rather than just a place to show up to show off crappy photos or sell gear.

I'm as much of a gear nut as the rest of the folks but so far, and I haven't been here that long, the thing I liked about this place from the get go is exactly what I was looking for - a sense of community.

I would hope that folks coming here to sell gear see that it's more than that (at least it has been to me) mainly because of all the "old guys" around here 😀
And I mean that with reverence..

Cheers
Dave

just say no!

i think it's kinda silly to buy from someone who just registered.

i prefer the people who i have developed a bit of a relationship with, those who appear regularly and especially those who laugh at my jokes 🙂

I'm an admitted newbie, but instead of dumping stuff I've been trying to resist snatching up all the good stuff you have for sale. I'm suuuure you don't mind that ;-) Heck, I sealed the deal for a Canonet the first week I signed up!

I did start posting here cause of the focue on the craft. The people that do the dumping surely move right along when they're done, so maybe they'll filter out and this is just a RFF phase (RFFP?).

You've told jokes????

Brett,

I've noticed it also. But I don't mind. I have been able to get two Canon P's from RFF members at reasonable prices, when I couldn't touch one on evil bay no matter what I bid. Plus a 5x7 rail camera, a Kodak Commercial Ektar 10", a folding Speedex Special "R", plus lens hoods and filters etc.

Besides, I think I am going to have my 5th annual going out of business sale on camera equipment here in a couple of weeks.

it's not any big deal.. I just wish the people whose first post is a for sale ad would spend a little time to get to know us before jumping in with "buy my stuff!"

we've been very blessed to have a friendly and helpful membership.. I hope it stays that way rather than devolving into an alternate classifieds site.. but at the same time, I'm happy to see new people joining

Think quite a lot of the "newbie" sellers who have been posting recently are actually well known traders on the other forums. RFF is just another selling ground to reach more audience.

Oh, you wanna kiss first.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Maybe it's possible to put a limit like, you gotta be registered for x time before you may put a for sale ad up
or you have to have x posts or whatever...

And maybe it's not possible. 🙂

I don't think it's really a problem at the moment, though.

A lot of stuff coming up for sell, almost all of it at good prices. And a lot of the sellers do hang out afterwards. I do not think that anyone has been ripped off intentionally; one "bad businessman"- but one that has come back and working to make things right.

The flip side of this topic is that many here just seem to want a forum to brag; not discuss the craft of photography. :=) Just a comment/

I agree with Joe, buyer beware, and buy smart. I am not saying that someone new to RFF is not honest, blah blah blah, but only deal with someone if you are personally comfortable with them. For me, I do tend to shy away from someone I do not recognize, but that may not be right for others.

Also, a lot of us post items for sale on other sites too. I have also sold items at Photo.net and ebay. It is important that you be honest and trust worthy when selling anywhere. Describe your items accurately, and be prepared to make good if you make a mistake. I have to admit that I screwed up a sale by not inspecting an item correctly, and am very embarrassed about it. But I also did everything I could to make the other person whole, and hopefully he agrees that only a little time and trouble with the mail process was the cost.

We have a very active community and market. As long as we all do the best to protect ourselves and be courteous and respectful of others we will be fine.
