Newbies selling stuff

I have bought and sold on RFF, very infrequently. I may do so again, but frankly, I feel funny about it. With eBay, one has a feeling that the deal is done when the deal is done. Money and product change hands, and that's that. On RFF, one feels that the deal is not done if the other party is the least bit unsatisfied. Nothing against RFF, indeed this feeling is caused by the friendly family kind of atmosphere that exists here.

An example - I sold a car to a relative. They wrote a check for it. Check bounced. Caught me at a bad time, and caused several of my credit card payments not to be made on time. Credit card companies raised my interest from 9% to 22%. OUCH! I asked the relative to make good on the bounced check and pay the bounced check charges from my bank. They did, but very slowly. Lots of "the check is in the mail, I don't know what could have happened" nonsense. If it had not been a family member, I'd have called them a damned liar and called the police.

I eventually got the money back, plus the bounced check charges, but I'm now stuck with damaged credit and higher interest rates. I've called the credit card companies, they refuse to lower my rates again. All I can do is pay them off, close the accounts, and try to open accounts with lower interest rates someday. I've been seriously and semi-permanently damaged by this thoughtless act by the relative.

If it were a stranger a) I would not have taken a check, and b) I would have gone after them tooth and nail for ALL the damage they did to me, including the high interest rates I'll have to pay from now until whenever. But since it is 'family' I have to grin and bear it.

Of course the end result is this - I no longer do business with family. Period. Not worth it.

I guess I feel the same way about RFF. I'd hate to sell something and have someone angry at me because we disagreed about price or condition, and I'd hate to buy something and feel taken advantage of, but not want to say anything because we're all 'family' here.

Dumb? Probably.

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

I just wanted a place where I would get honest information about rangefinder cameras. I wanted to get an RF rig for portability while traveling. I found this place quite by accident after I googled "Cosina Voigtlander." I bought a Bessa R with 35 classic thanks to information I found here. I cant visit this site as often now that school is starting back, but I drop by when I can.

Sometime people move from one forum to another to find their place. I started at photo.net but found it is quite volatile sometimes. With the LUG you have that element...well you know what I mean. Besides one good way to ingratiate yourself with a group is to sell good equipment at fair prices...you're appreciated and one gets more comfortable with everyone. I haven't submitted any images simply because I don't have a scanner and don't want a scanner (too much time on the computer as it is).

hello all,

i sympathesize the sentiments member bmattock expressed, i have not been around long but i am very positive that most of the folks - at most of the time - are honest, helpful and friendly, except perhaps when the post topics get abit touchy for some; but we all seems to have lived with this quite well;

one thing i appretiate this forum most is that folks here are willing to share advices and experience not selfishly, and people here are passionate, in their own different ways, about RF photography - which is the foremost reason we gather and spend time here

i tried to sell and tried to buy at RFF occasionally, i have sold a Nikkor LTM to a local member who hang around here sometime, and the deal was smooth; i have tried to buy some accesories from RFF members, although we didn't make it because we couldn't agree on price and shipping charges, but no offence has been done;

when i had some pieces of gear to let go i posted it here first, at a better price than i would put on that bay - i think the gear could go for a better home here; but out there, it is business with a stranger

as previously mentioned, this site has a huge audience and they all have different "needs," but indeed, the atmosphere here is the best among those i have been participated in

bravo to all!

I think the rise in sellers is just the price of fame. However, the sellers I see coming up are people who don't deal professionally, but shooters like most of us, who recycle gear and aren't in this for a profit.

Sure, I remember there was a stinker once, but the rest of the people here are, at least to me, extraordinarily reliable. I've bought (not yet sold to) from RFF members and, in their case, I consider it a deal between friends: no need to analyze feedback and inquire about habits.

However, like Rover, I buy mostly from people I "know" from here. Otherwise, I wait and then we talk.

In any case, Brett, I think the proliferation of sellers (not of beers) is sign of good health. 🙂

BTW, how's yours? 😉

I am also a pretty new guy here and I also started out on photo.net. What I like about these forums is:

We all like pretty much the same stuff.
No wedding questions.
No what school should I go to questions.
Not a whole lot of when will the newest Canon digital come out.
I have not noticed any my camera is better than yours crap.

I just enjoy hanging out here. I still check photo.net sometimes, buy this is my favorite now.

my health and my beer are both excellent! thanks for asking 🙂

I generally split my time between APUG and here. I shoot 100% 35mm film equally rangefinder and SLR. Truthfully there are no dumb questions from anyone and I like that all posts are treated with respect. In respect to Bill Mattock's unfortunate experience with a transaction in the family. With large sums its certified cheques or money orders with me or cash.

I'm another (but not very pretty) newbie. I came here when I saw a link to RFF on the FM forum just at the same time as I was looking for a RF and so I was immediately into looking to buy (and did).

I've also asked one or two questions and got a great deal of very useful feedback but the thing that impressed me most was that a lot of the feedback differed but no one criticized or belittled any of the other posters.

So, maybe people do com here initially just to buy and sell but I think quite a few, like me, will end up sticking around simply because of the great depth of knowledge and the refreshing attitude

well it's nice to see you here, andy and keith and kevin and zpuskas and all the others

I suppose when I started this thread, it just struck me as odd that people would choose to 'introduce' themselves here by putting something up for sale.. but whatever trips your shutter 🙂

I just looked back at my posting history. Turns out my 3rd post was a FS post. However, I'd been a lurker for a while before even registering. It's hard to know how new someone is to a forum. In almost all cases, when I read a forum which allows anonymous guest access, I never actually register until I decide to start posting, which is often months (sometimes years) after I start following a site.

But, far from number 1. 🙂

dang, I thought I was finally Number 1 at something

in retrospect, I recall being a lurker here for a month or so.. then signing up but not commenting for another week or two.. and then finally commenting on some random topic without introducing myself.. I was rather surprised (pleasantly, tho) when Joe (our fearless leader/moderator) immediately welcomed me to the community

of course, that was way back when we had less than 1000 members 😀

btw, is there a way to tell what your own member 'number' is?

see? I wasn't kidding when I said...
