I popped by NewLab in San Francisco to get my film developed from the "14 Day 1 Camera 1 Lens Challenge" and was sadly informed that they will be closing and are not accepting any more items for processing. It's really too bad, I have heard great things about them over the years and had experienced their E6 processing, which seemed very solid.

The pro labs in general really seem to be having hard times.

Time to hunt for another local lab. My previous favorite, Calypso, moved from Santa Clara to Santa Cruz.

geez, thanks for letting us know.

they had just moved to smaller quarters and i have some scanning that they were unable to do at the time of the move.

This is bad news indeed.

I thought they were the best transparency folks in SF. Wonder who else might be left.

Shall we hunt and post our experiences with the survivors here?

Definitely! I'd love to know who to go to now. I took a few rolls to "The Darkroom" in Belmont this afternoon and I will let you know how they do.

Let's all share our findings so we can help support the remaining labs in the area.

Photolab is great.... they do a wonderful job on B/W film and on C-41...but they don't do E-6 in house.

They sent it to NewLab.
(until yesterday anyway)

NewLab does do impeccable work. Several years ago they quoted me the best price by far on a bunch of 35mm slide dupes, their work was absolutely perfect.

Sad news, for all you SF photog's.

Lightwaves on Russ st (not that far away from the new newlab location). http://www.lightwavesimaging.com/

I've used them for about 6 months now, they do good work on all formats (including e6). They are nice guys, have a system to email you when your order is ready (sometimes before the time they quote you). Also every time I go in there they are playing great music, such as Sam Cooke b-sides. Try them!

hmm....they just moved to their new location too. I can second the recommendation for lightwaves, they do great work and the staff is really nice.

Adolph Gasser is doing E6, good results, one day turn around,
Photoworks, Church and Market, not sure if they process themselves or used NewLab service

My main issue with some of the "big box" processing, like Costco, is that occassionally I have had some serious scratching issues on the negs and very poor printing. Sometimes they are great, sometimes poor.

If you have a location that works well consistently that's terrific!

For C41, do any of these labs do better work than Costco? If so, how?
