After a couple of weeks of after work and weekend tinkering, I finally got this thing ready to be presented as a birthday gift to my brother. Well almost, i am still not sure if I should fill in the engravings. Haven't ever done it yet, and dont want to mess it up.

He hasn't used RFs yet, but he likes to photograph and may be he'll like the RF way. If not - this could just be a nice shelf decoration.

Nah leave it with the engraving as it is - you don't want to show off it's a Fed3 or someone might wanna steal it!

ok ok no-one want's to steal a Fed, but great paint job there

I used spray paint for cars. It seems to work okay, but I dont want to test how durable it is 😉

w3rk5 knows more about repainting and has made this painting instructions pdf

check it out: instructions

go to sovietarmystuff on the bay, buy up a load of feds, and repaint and sell them as special editions on here 😛 make sure they're cla'd and everythin an you can make some money!

I dont actually know how to CLA, just adjusting the RF took me hours on this thing (was a stubborn sob). The durability of the paint is also questionable and it took so much of my free time, that I wouldnt want to part with it unless it can buy me an M8 🙂

Wow lubitel! 😱 You're putting out some really nice finishes. This is only the third one you've painted right?

Is it metallic red? Look's very sharp. I'm sure your brother will like it. So what are you going to paint next? 🙂

it is my third. 🙂 the paint is just regular glossy auto paint (acryllic spray). Its definitely better than the first spray i tried, and I think at least as durable as that metallic finish last time, but I am not quite sure yet. Last time I used a clear finish, this one doesnt require it. Will see how it holds. I gotta tell you though, repainting that rim with black (first time) was a real pain! especially the sanding part and taping part. glueing the leather was also a real test of patience. 😉

But look at the results. Well worth it.

One way I have filled in engravings is to use a white grease pencil and work it into the engraving then wipe off the excess with an old T-shirt so as not to damage the finish.
