News from the dark side

Hi there,

Just a quick note to let you know I just uploaded a new series of pictures on my website. They were taken last Friday at the CulbSin fetish night.

The subject is not for everyone and this is why I don't think it would be appropriate to post them in my RFF gallery. But they are pretty darn good and I'm sure some members would like to see them.

They were shot on Ilford Delta 3200 at EI 6400 and processed according to Ilford's documentation in X-Tol by my local lab. They do the scanning too on their Noritsu 2901. I used my Bessa R2 with my Ultron 35/1.7 and my 75/2.5 for a few.

The light was changing during the show. It was pretty dark but I had some help from a video guy with a nice on-camera light (but he wasn't on all the time). I had to shoot between f/2 and 2.8 and from 1/30 to1/8 sec.

If you want to see this material (again not for everyone), go to my site and check for "ClubSin 2005-08-05" in the gallery index.

There are also recent shots from two concerts.

Sheesh -- X-rated vaudeville. I didn't find it offensive, exactly, but it's pretty darn weird.

Certainly impressive results from your Delta 3200, though, especially for presumably non-customized scans from a processing lab. I'd probably be shooting a lot more film (instead of digital) if this type of service were readily available where I live. Negs, contact sheet, and a CD of good scans would be a hot ticket for me.

The "punk rock band" was weird even for us who are used to see those performances regularly. It reminded me of those weird underground performances from the 80's. The music was definitely similar! When I saw that guy crawl onto the stage chained to that disco ball, I knew we were in for something special. Not to mention the slave girl in a cat suit who was almost my size (I'm 6'2" and 240lbs)!

My local lab always does a superb job, extremely fast and not expansive. They charge me 13.99$CAN for manual B&W processing (pushed) and 3000x2000 scans on a CD with index card. Their prints are superb and they recently agreed to get that Kodak Endura Metallic paper I love so much. I get beautifull 12x18 prints out of those scans. They also do cross-processing (slide into C-41) on location in an hour or so. And since they're at the corner of my street, I'm in heaven!

Is Nick's Sex Aquarium still open in Montreal?

I don't think so but I can ask some friends who might know for sure.

That makes for a great quote. Nice pictures. In these high ISOs theres a lot of contrast and that made these pictures all the better. Have you arranged to be the clubs official photographer?

Thanks.

The high contrast is something I've always loved and looked for. Sometimes, some people will tell me they find there's too much contrast in my pictures. I find it just fine, although often on the edge, as it matches my subjects nicely. I love the gritty look of fast B&W films. It's a look you just don't get with digital, especially when it's that dark.

I started shooting there for a show made by a few friends (the June 3rd event). When the producer of those events saw my pics, he asked me to come back everytime with my camera. They already had one official photographer (shooting digital with flash) but he wanted that different look (B&W film with available light). So I became the other official photographer. I'm also invited to all other events like private parties, BBQs and such and I always bring a camera, often a Stylus Epic. Those pictures are not shown publicly though. I also get some personal request for very special and private shoots.

There's a big event coming September 2, 3 and 4. It's the "Fetsih Weekend" and I'll be shooting everything. It should be fun...

Marc,

I'm going to be in the Montreal area around that time. I very seriously volunteer my services as assistant, or a second shooter, if you can get me in for at least one night.

LOL If you look decent in a latex catsuit, you can have the job!

But seriously, I might try to get an assistant to walk around with a slave 😀 flash.

Send me a PM and we'll see what's possible.

Oh, and BTW, I enjoyed your pictures. I think the contrast is a bit too much for my taste, but it does add lots of atmosphere. A bit disappointing to have that big "Club Sin" banner in the background, but at the same time, I understand why they have it up there...

I remember going to the New City Suburbs almost two years ago, and they had twin sisters involved in about 1.5 hours of food fighting. 😎 I don't think I'd ever wished for a camera more than at that moment... 😀
