Nex 3 does Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam

So for my second big trip of the year (Grand Canyon, Zion, Hoover Dam, Las Vegas) I ended up shooting exclusively with my Nex 3. I had brought along two M mount film bodies as well, but didn't end up using them. It was a social trip with friends, so I didn't want to be the geek with three cameras, switching lenses and holding up the group. The Nex performed really well, it's a great light-weight travel camera. One thing I did notice, heat really does affect sensor noise, much more so than I thought it would. In 115F heat, ISO 200 looked much more like 800 at the temperatures I'm used to... luckily the Nex 3 looks pretty damn good at 800 🙂

nice images; I especially like the B & W ones. Did you do any post-processing on these? I think that B & W mode in the NEX is pretty good for a digital, but yours look better than mine!

I do all my B&W post processing in photoshop... the Nex's B&W mode is good enough for previewing which ones will look good monochrome, but it doesn't handle the shadows and highlights too well... makes the images far to contrasty.

I'm really enjoying my Nex-3 too. I've just come back from a couple of weeks in Tuscany and used the Nex a lot more than my Zeiss Ikon. Very pleased with the results. I don't have any Sony lenses though, just using my RF lenses with an M adaptor.

Since coming back I've bought a Nikon-Nex adaptor: looking forward to trying out my 1962 Nikkor-S 5.8cm f1.4 on it 🙂

I find it is difficult to photograph crand canyon in color due to the distance haze. I took this photo from 12000 feet above.

What lens did you use? Please don't say the 16mm kit lens, I can't get anything close to this quality from mine.

They where all taken with the kit zoom lens. I used voigtlander and leica lenses for most of the trip, but I was with a group and didn't want to annoy everyone by constantly changing lenses while we were hiking the trail, so I just went with the kit zoom. I have to say it performed admirably 🙂

I shoot my NEX 3 in B/W RAW with yellow focus peaking. If I like the B/W in PP I keep it, if not RAW, of course allows me to flip to color. For me manual focusing is more accurate using B/W and yellow focus peaking.😉
