THe high ISO tests and the horrible results from Leica mount wide angle lenses have sealed the fate of a NEX 7 purchase for me. I own an Leica M8 and am looking for a high ISO alternative for my M mount lenses for low light work only and I was hoping the NEX7 would be a good camera for this. The reviews are showing the Nex 5n is superior to the Nex 7 for Leica M lenses, especially wide angle lenses.

Have both an M8 and 5n. The 5n's low light capabilities are amazing when contrasted with anything over 800 iso. 6400 with the NEX easily beats 1200 withe the M8.

I wish Sony had put in the 5n sensor into the 7. For ease of use the 7 appears to be far superior. I didn't like experience with the 5n, too many menu options for my liking. I'm looking for a good travel camera as film - although not entirely unpleasant while flying - is becoming more of a hassle.

Have you programmed all of your custom buttons? After I set the camera up, I rarely need to go into the menus at all.

+1 once you have it set up. I hit the menu to format, and change from P to S. which is fast. ISO shutter wb shoot mode all on the dials.

I agree with all of this. The smaller pixels of the nex-7 gives difraction unsharpness as early as f=5.6 if I understand it correctly. One more reason to get a 5N instead. Built in EVF would be nice though.

Diffraction is never a reason to buy a lower MP camera over a higher MP camera, as the higher MP camera will yield similar resolution results as the lower MP camera past the diffraction point, but the higher MP camera will yield a resolution advantage below the diffraction point. So, the higher MP camera is as good or better than the lower MP camera at every aperture.
