I am trying to get hold of local Sony service (so far both my emails and calls go unaswered) to send my NEX-5N in to get the clicking noise issue fixed. Has anyone had this fix done? Does it solve the issue completely or just reduce the noise?

I can't answer your question, but the NEX 5N I purchased in late December makes no clicking noise that I can hear even during quick panning. So I gather they've figured out exactly what caused it and, I assume, how to fix it.

I had mine done right after I got it. It reduced the noise, but didn't get rid of it completely. I only hear it when I kind of violently pan, which I never do in practice, so it doesn't bother me.
I called up Sony and after talking to a tech they gave me an RMA, and if I remember right, sent me a FedEx shipping slip in an email. I had it back in about a week.

Thanks for the information, guys. I hope to get this sorted out as soon as possible. Until then, I need to use an external audio recorder for all ambient audio, which can be pretty inconvenient.

You can use this link to start the process. I went so far as to getting the label sent to me and then never sent the camera in.
I figured that since I almost never shoot video anyway and would use a tripod if I did, I really didn't need the "fix" since it's just a heavier grease applied to a moving part.
YMMV

I bought mine new in Oct., and it noticeably rattles. It actually bothers me even when shooting stills, but I haven't had a chance to send it in, yet.

It took them a couple of weeks, but I now have the noise issue fixed. No clicking noise whatsoever in normal hand-held video.
