I read that the connection is physically the same, except that the 5N has an additional pin left of the screw. I have no idea what the pin does.
Here is a photo:
Maybe some adventurous soul could drill a hole in the right spot on a 5 or 3 and see if that's all that's needed?

Does the finder have a matching registration pin?
Sony may also have chosen to prevent fitting to early Nex models as a precaution.

... but as a precaution against what? The only reasons I can think of are:
- business reasons (sell more new cameras)
- the finder has power requirements above what the old cameras can supply
- the pinout has been changed to support live video
And wierdly enough, when I look at photos (or better, renders) of the finder, I can't see the corresponding pin:

Let's not forget, Sony never intended it to be used as we want to.
It was meant for those wanting to upgrade a bit from P&S or people in need of a convenient small cam when a DSLR was too bulky.
So it caught them by surprise when "enthusiasts" began clamoring for this and that.
So berate them for lack of foresight.
But then again foresight is something most of us lack.

Has some intrepid (misbegotten) soul fitted the finder as yet?

In my case, good thing I am totally happy with Clearviewers on my Nex3's.
Yes. We read that. Countless times. It's like every Nex thread reaches a point when you bring that up.
(You should start a shop and sell them.)
