Anyone using extension tubes on the NEX. I was thinking of these from Amazon but thought I would check - not sure if it is AF. Seems like a good price:

These obviously are (technically) AF, as they have the full contact set. But don't be that focused on that feature - in practice, AF with tubes might disappoint you. That is, all my E-mount primes (Sony 16mm and 30mm macro plus the Sigmas) take a terrible time hunting for focus with the Kenko extension rings on both C3 and 5N, and frequently find no focus at all - I suspect that the camera AF software does not even consider the possibility of extension rings. Unless the later cameras improved something there, you'll be better off using them in manual mode.
Nonetheless, if you want to use E-mount lenses close up you'll need a tube kit with electronic contacts. The cheaper all-mechanical tubes will only work with adapted manual legacy lenses, as the E-mount lenses require the contacts to set their (electronically controlled) aperture even in manual focus mode.

I haven't tried it yet, but I could easily use my NEX-F adapter, then mount a Nikon extension tube on the adapter, then use my Nikon AIS lenses. I'll have to post an image once I give it a try.

Can you tell what lens(es) do you intend to use them for? Thanks Sevo. Ordered them and will report back.

Probably 30/2.8 Sigma or 50/3.5 Sony if I ever get one or something else interesting if Sony ever release new lenses. At £30 not much to lose in experimenting.

Slight (and probably currently irrelevant) correction - counting the image they have ten contacts, like all my lenses. My Kenko tubes (which were four times as expensive, and go focus hunting nonetheless) have eleven. Perhaps that is merely a extra ground point, but if it is not, there might be other or future lenses that need that extra contact.

Reporting back:
The tubes arrived: very plastic construction, mount as well as tubes, which I suppose is indicated by the price. Focusing is good on an NEX7 with kit lens - focusing down to about 1-2 inches and (surprisingly) sharp. Will post a couple of photos later.
I have to say composing macro on an articulated screen with live view is the way forward!

Cheap macro tubes
Cheap macro tubes
I just got a cheap set of E-mount macro tubes on eBay for $6, and I use them with an M adapter and a 50mm Summilux.
When it comes to focusing you have to move the camera closer or further away. Turning the lens doesn't really affect much.
Here's the most recent results.
