That said, you don't want to be battling camera issues with all else that you'll have on your plate.

Film M's have endured and performed well in circumstances like these over the years. Digital M's...not so much or at least the jury is still out.

I wouldn't risk it. Take the film M's and a digital P&S with a few cards. This gives you the ability to send dig images home as needed, work with the films of your choice and some redundancy for peace of mind.

Have a great trip and post when possible. It sounds like the trip of a lifetime.

I'm amazed at the decent quality that's possible from a smart phone; so do any of you regard them as a wide angle P&S and so need just the (say) 90mm on the film camera?

Plans Change

Plans Change

Well, Tierra del Fuego by motorcycle is on the back burner. I am riding to Alaska in August and plan on an M2, 50mm and Ektar 100 and a waterproof Olympus TG860 as a backup. I will be riding my BMW GS Adventure as I did 300 miles on the small 250 last Saturday and my rear end is still complaining.

And funny thing, my riding partner has had some medical problems. Apparently, he has been on crutches and has dropped his big Yamaha cruiser a few times on southern California freeways (just now telling me this!). So, he has decided that he will be riding a three wheel Can Am Spyder.

At the end of September, I will be setting off on an around the world trip being gone at least six but possibly as long as twelve months. I am thinking my M9 and M2 with 21/35/90 or 21/50/90 and TriX in the M2. Since I am planning on diving and some rugged hiking/adventure trips, the TG860 goes as well.

As always, suggestions welcome.

Just take M2, if it dies you just continue to enjoy the trip yourself.

Sounds like a great trip!

My suggestion would also be two bodies and one lens each. I've traveled all over the world with an M2 and a Fuji x100s. Now that combo is an MP and x100t, but essentially it's always 35mm and 50mm focal lengths along with being digital and film. As others have mentioned, I'd be concerned with the rangefinder getting knocked out of alignment due to all the vibration on a bike. It is also always nice to have a backup regardless if that is film or digital.

Alzska is M2 for sure. The Olympus is small, shock and waterproof and does video. Vibration on a motor ycle is relative with BMW being smooth. Mirrors do not even vibrate. A bit of foam rubber in the tank bag isolates the camerz well.

Just read about you plans for a in my opinion fabulous trip.
I just returned from a vacation in the far east, took with me Olympus m43 , Rolleicord 6x6 film, rollei se. Will never mix digital and film again. My advice or preference would be: M2, 2 lenses.
Just prepare a cushion of foam and thats it.
If you really want to play it save, get a backup M2 body.
