I see that Adorama has a Nikkor RF 2.1cm f/4 lens listed on Ebay with a required opening bid of just under $4000. That price is well beyond my budget, but I understand such lenses are quite rare and desired by collectors. Is it unusual to see one for sale? I will be interested to see what it sells for.

I could never get my money back on a lens that price. Especially, as I've never sold an image. I had a hard time justifying a 20mm Pentax AF lens for my (DSLRs and)SLRs.

That's certainly a collector price, not a user price! On your final thought, I sympathize with that... A 20mm lens has limited and specialized use. While I'm generally a fan of primes, not zooms, a very wide zoom seems to make some sense. Say, a 20-35mm f/4 instead of a 20mm f/4 prime. Larger, probably more expensive, but less specialized and could be a reasonable "walk-around" lens.

From a practical side, the 21mm Carl Zeiss Biogon can be gotten at reasonable price and it works very well on Nikon RF cameras.

It is still one of the best 21mm designs ever produced, and in knowledgeable hands can give results very difficult to equal with other similar focal length lenses.

It was and still is a very special lens to some.

Please note that there are only 200 of these known to exist...the Nikon F mount version is the same although produced in much greater numbers.
My opinion is $4000 is a very fair price BUT I don't think it will get a bid!!
Everyone knows Adorama lowers prices if there are no bids on the initial offering...but I may be wrong.
