Nikkor 35mm f1.4 AF-S

The bokeh looks pretty good — surprisingly, for a Nikkor prime. Sorta like the 35/1.8.

Why couldn't they do that with the 85 and 50G?

I had been waiting for an AF 35/1.4 from Nikon for a long time. But, that price is just too great. People will buy it, though. People. Other people.
 
Well, a used 35/2 afd for $200.00 is looking pretty good right now. As nice as it may be I can live without the extra stop, weight/size and especially the cost.

One more thing about the new 35 - the optics give a nod to the Noct-NIKKOR. The lens has been constructed to, among other things, perform well for nightime photography. Pinpointed light, minimized reflections and sagital blur, etc. "Astrophotography" is prominent in the initial features. That is not to say you'll go out and shoot closeups of the moon, but should be good for starry nights.

By the way, I think I'll post a couple of snapshots from the new 1.4/85 in that other thread, check it out if you're curious.
 
Also announced Sept. 1 is the Zeiss Distagon 35mm F1.4 ZF.2, which I haven't seen mentioned here, though I may have missed it. $1,843 recommended retail price. Both Zeiss & Nikkor are way out of my budget, but I'd still be interested in a comparison other than MF vs AF. The Nikon mount 35 has no aperture ring; the Distagon does have one for the Nikon mount, but not for Canon mount. After a lottery win, I'd go for the Distagon as I have a D90 and an F3, and want lenses usable on both. This is how I got into digital, somewhat.
 
Wow, it's good to see these out, but pretty large and pricey. I would hope the 35 has less distortion than the 35/1.8 AFS I have.

The 35/1.8 AFS for $199 is a no brainer, but this one, at 9x, I think there's an expectation of some performance with that big chunk of plastic 😉

The 35mm you guys are talking about, I assume you mean DX lens? Umm, yeah, I guess performance might be a little better 😉

DX version is not a substitute for this lens. It's made to be used on FX bodies, pro use. If you have DX body, sorry dudes, you're not the target market.

For some time, I have been looking forward to an auto focus 35mm f/1.4 lens but will have be satisfied with my manual focus version because without an aperture ring, it is of little value to me.
 
Well the center sharpness and the extra stop from the 35mm f/2 that it is supposed to replace is nice, but I really do not like the corner quality which is pretty important in a street/landscape lens... especially since these are supposed to be prime samples from the nikon site...
A bit dissapointing to be honest for a lense that wants to play with the big boys...

I hope these are just bad samples...
 
Hello again. I didn't manage to do as much shooting with the new 35 this weekend as I hoped for, mostly because I was shooting something else with my film cameras, but I did take it with me for a few drinks in the evening. As you can see I've done a highly scientific test! The setting have been painstakingly arranged and everything calibrated to the highest of standards just so I could provide 100% objective results for your viewing and judging 🙂
Naah, I'll put this lens to its intended and proper use soon eventually. In any case, I don't do "testshots", I "test" lenses by taking them out and shooting what I normally would.

Ahhhhh always good to see the results of the exact and precise science of lens testing at a pub 😉
