Nikkor Micro 105 2.8 D - Compatible With F4?

AF Micro, I ought to clarify.

If by "compatible" you mean the AF works, the answer is yes. The D lenses' AF is driven by the motor in the body, and the F4 has the driver. It's visible in the mount.

It will work with the F4 and N8008s, plus newer cameras with AF motor built into the camera. Nikon cameras without the built-in motor, will work as manual focus.

Are they compatible with each other? My friend, that is a match made in heaven. I used to do loads of macro work with that combo, and often an SB-26 (usually on an SC-17) for bugs and other things that move, and it was fantastic. And while you lose autofocus--which you really shouldn't be using for macro anyway--it also works great with Nikon's old extension tubes. I used to loooove shooting Velvia, Provia and Kodachrome 64 with that setup. I can highly recommend that lens & camera combo.

Loads of lenses work great with the F4--it will even autofocus AF-S lenses, even though they came after the F4--but another that's really brilliant with that camera is the 180mm/F2.8 AF(-D). You can shoot loads of stuff with that superb lens, and if you throw a PN-11 extension tube on the back of it, it's wonderful for shooting dragonflies, butterflies and other small but larger than strictly macro things.

I gotta agree that the 180mm works great on the F4 and the F5...I've shot a ton of film with both...I've actually worn down the textured paint on my 180mm AF lens.

All Nikkor AF-D lenses work perfectly well on the F4 with no loss of functionality. If you look at this page:

and scroll all the way down to “Professional 35mm SLRs”, that chart shows the F4 will work fine with AF-D lenses.

Those charts he has on that page are excellent. The best on the internet, IMHO.
