Or, for search purposes, Nikon 85mm 2.0. Sonnar for good measure.

This lens arrived a week ago thanks to Roland (ferider). Tonight I have photographs from the lens to share.

Everyone is welcome to post samples from this lens here.

My reaction, you ask? A keeper for sure.

First two: f = 2.8, Fuji NGH II

Next two: f = 11, Fuji NGH II

Thanks for looking.

Roland, thank you!

I think I have something at 2.0. I meant to shoot the welder at 2.0, but forgot. I know the portraits aren't very artsy, but BOY! are they SHARP!

For Roland: Gizmo #1 @ 2.0, Gizmo #2 @ 2.8

Wayne - wow, those portraits look great! I presume the formula is more or less the same as the Zeiss Sonnar from what you imply? The closest I've got is a Jupiter 9 85/2 which is also an amazingly sharp lens.

Thanks, Wayno. Check out the "Sonnar by any other name thread." The Nikkor-P is kinda, sorta, maybe, not quite the same as the Zeiss Sonnar.

ROLAND: Look at the two Gizmo pictures. I thought I focused the same for both, the two links of chain where they change direction. Is that a bit of focus shift I'm seeing? I'm going back with a tripod. That Gizmo is always hanging in the same place, and the light is always the same.

One more wide open

One more wide open

Last one. I won't bore you anymore. Yes, it's sharp wide open. Yes, it's sharp around the edges.

It shouldn't Wayne. This lens has very thin DOF, 2-3cm at 1.1m distance
and f2 (like a Noctilux wide open!) and is calibrated to be sharp at f2.
To illustrate, DOF is similar to the distance between eyes and glasses for a portrait.

To be sure try with tripod, middle of RF patch, and a tape measure (I
know it's boring). Or use a pen and mark a line on the Gitzmo ...
Even with my well calibrated M3s I get 1 out of 3 shots wrong ....

I do like the Gizmo photos though. Typical Sonnar OOF.

Sequoia, right ? Nice. Don't you feel it fits the 50/1.4 ? 🙂

Best,

Roland.

Sequoia? Hah! This is the swamp, remember? Bald cypress.

For my next adventure, I will take both Nikkors out for a pub crawl. Chaperoned by the wee UC-Hexanon.

By the way, the 8.5 cm Nikkor-P attached to a Leica M5 is a real Manly Man's rig.

Yep. Don't forget the hood 🙂

If I remember the story, the 85/2 was the lens that the photographer from Life discovered when he was in Japan. He thought it was the sharpest med-tele there was and I think he was right.

Thanks for sharing, great shots.

It's the all chrome version. Don't even hint that there is a lighter black version. When I bought the Speed Graphic last month, the seller's wife found a bag of film in the freezer. There were two rolls of the NGH II in the sack. They have both been exposed. The second roll needs to be developed. That's all I have.

Please don't think that I meant to come and take your film away. NPZ and Pro 800 are OK, but they seem a little contrastier to me than the older stuff.

The later version of the 8.5cm lens was available in black, and I think it's aluminum. I'm sure someone around here actually knows for sure.

Yes, perhaps

There seems to be a focus problem with Gizmo 2.

I think the focus problem is behind the viewfinder. As discussed, I will go back with a tripod to be sure.

I just meant that I came to this film late. I have 20 rolls of the Superia X-tra 800 in the freezer. Good or bad, it will have to do. Honestly, I'm not sure that I like 800 speed color film. On the other hand, what are you going to do indoors at night? 😱 😀
