I may be kicking the tires on an old question but is there a better alternative for the Nikon eyecup? It's nice to have some soft material to keep from scratching my glasses and have been through the suggestions for rangefinders. I was just curious if there is anyone out there who has tried all of the different grommets, key covers and assorted other doohickeys before I spend an afternoon in front of the gasket box at the local hardware store. The eyecup is great but it interferes with closing the back on a Nikkormat and I have owned enough Nikons in the past to know about the disappearing eyecup. Any suggestions are appreciated and hopefully I'll have something to post on Eriks' Nikkormat thread soon.

If you wear classes, an eyecup is a poor choice. The padding from the rubber is good, but there it too much of it.

My suggestion for both Nikkormats, F2s, the later F Photomics, and for the non-HP F3 prisms is to use an FM/FE eyepiece. These have an integrated rubber ring and are very compact so that they don't hold your eye any further from the eyepiece than necessary.

Note that only the replacement FM/FE eyepiece has the rubber. The other diopters are all metal.

The only downside to using the FM/FE eyepiece on a Nikkormat is with Nikkormat FS, FT, and FTn models. When you need the removable accessory shoe you need the original eyepiece to hold it on. The more compact FM/FE eyepiece won't do that job.

Thank you for the suggestion! Ordered one from Amazon and it is exactly what I was looking for. Compact, allows me to see more of the focusing screen and it doesn't scratch my glasses.

Yup I use the same FM2 eyecup on my Nikkormats, on my Nikon Fs, my F2s. It replaces the original metal rimmed ones that will tear up your glasses.
I got mine from eBay for about $12 (original eqmnt)

Dear Huss,

I'm curious, is the eyecup you use the Nikon DK-19 or it's Amazon almost free equivalent? I bought a knock off version for my F4S from Amazon and it works great. I was hoping it might be interchangeable and usable on my F and FG?

I suppose I could unscrew the metal ones and figure it out myself but I'm incredibly lazy!

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

No, it's the actual replacement eyepiece for the FE/FM not the eyecup.
