I read the manual online for both these cameras and it seems like to activate the meter the advance lever must be out. Do these cameras function like the FM2N where the advance lever must be slight out in order for you to release the shutter, or can you push the advance lever in so its flush with the body and still be able to release the shutter. I ask this because I am left eye dominant and could meter through the top window but worried about having to have the advance lever poking me.

Thanks

I too am a left eye shooter, have used my FTn since 1974 and still have full vision in my right eye. I have never even considered the lever to be an issue until reading your post.

Forgert about it and get on with shooting a great camera.

I have an F2 Photomic, an FTn, and previously owned both FM and FE - never a problem shooting left eyed with any of them - not an issue. Enjoy.

I'm also a left-eye shooter and have used my F2 which requires the advance lever to be in the stand-off position to activate the meter without any problems since 1988.
For the record, FM/FM2/FE/FE2/FM3a/FA/F3 bodies with motor drives attached do not require the advance lever to be activated to turn on the meter.

Another good reason to have a motor drive!😉

I am not a left eye shooter so this isn't a problem for me. But I love the Nikons' use of the standoff position to turn the meter on -- pretty impossible to leave the meter on by mistake.

bother left eye shooter. I have two FTn's. The lever has to be very slightly out from the body for the meter to be activated. The position does not affect firing the shutter on that model if the shutter is cocked then it will fire whether the lever is out for metering or in against the body of the camera.
It's never been a problem.

My F, F2, FA and FM bodies are all motorized, but I use them because with a motor the camera's shutter is always cocked and ready for the next shot. I never have to bring the camera away from my eye to advance the film and re-cock, giving me a greater chance to capture the candid shots I look for on the streets. The meter being on with the advance lever tight against the body (except for the F2) is an added bonus.

+1...that is why I really do prefer motor drives.
