Nikon 105 f/2.5 vs 85 f/2

My apologies at using additional bandwidth repeating these images, but they are clean and saturated, and very nice! What film / scanner or digital camera were used for these?

The NEX-7 will come with an EVF and special sensor with micro lenses on the corners to get them even better--24mp.

infinity shots are SO demanding, esp when you have big distances.

It surprised me to hear this 105 copy was not sharp at infiinty.

I have one coming, along the a 50/1.4 (both S mount). I don't know why 😉 They came up in the classifeds for good prices 225/200, so thought--why not?

here is the 100/2

it's actually slightly lighter than the 105, if I'm not mistaken.
mine weighs 505 grams.
this one cost me 315USD last fall, which is actually around the same price the 105s often fetch, with LTM version sometimes even higher.

will be interesting to compare them
the nikon, a legend
the canon, far more rare, faster, and probably sharper around 2.5---but perhaps the flavor of the 105 is better for portraits wide open.

well my 105 arrived:

it is about 6 grams lighter than the canon 100/2, but the S to M adds 80 grams, so the package is heavier.

while I suspect the Canon is a bit sharper everywhere, it certainly seems to perform fine at infinity---I will get some long landscapes when I have a chance.

Obviously this lens is in very good shape---TY to Vince who also sold me a wonderful s-mount 50/1.4 SC, both at very reasonable prices 🙂

Pretty obvious the infinty performance is close and the 105 seems to my eye fine at infinity.

I have both lenses for Nikon SLR in AIS flavor and always felt the 105/2.5 was one of the finer lenses ever made. I found the 85/2 soft and flattering for portraits, but I never liked it for anything else. Now that I can use them (albeit with a 1.5 crop factor) on my D7000, I wonder how I'll like them.

I too have each lens in both Nikon F and S mount versions, and in each case prefer the 105 to the 85.

The 105 and 85 AIS series lenses are different optical formulas than the RF lenses. The early 105's in f-Mount were the same as the RF lenses, but the 8.5cm F2 RF lens was never made in F-Mount. The 85/1.8 Nikkor-H and 85/2 Nikkor were both Planar formula.

Do the M9 and Nikon RF's come with 105mm framelines? I was thinking of picking one up eventually for use on my Zeiss Ikon, but I don't know how the framing would work.

The Nikon SP, S3, and S4 have framelines for the 10.5cm lens.

The M8 and M9: use the 90mm framelines. They provide 100% coverage using the inner border of the framelines.

I have both the lenses you quote and I am really happy with them. I would also agree with you about performance albeit they are SLR lenses which I use on my F3HP. I have a 75mm and 90mm lens which I use with my Leica M cameras and they seem to get about equal use. I have no digital knowledge whatsoever so I am unable to help you there
