The best camera is one that still works!
I posted a thread about this a while ago but got busy unexpectedly and never followed it up.
Is this particular scanner with very low use worth $1000.00 AUD? ... I bumped into the person who has a couple of these today and she's actually committed to a price for the one she barely used, it was a backup!

If it's a complete kit with the full strip feeder I would say yes jump on it.
I use a Coolscan V ed. Scans at the same resolution as the 5000 according to online reviews.
The V ed can only scan 6 frames at a time. The 5000 can do a whole roll with the correct feeder.
These are great dedicated 35mm scanners.
The V ed can be found used as low as $300. I payed $400 for mine. $450-600 seems a more typical price.

Don't walk! RUN!!!! Coolscan 5000 ED's are selling for way more than a grand these days. And even if the SA-30 roll feeder is not included, the SA-21 strip feeder can easily be hacked to enable full roll scanning.

Dude! Keith, I answered before I saw who was posting this. You are a film aficionado, so I can't believe you are even asking this question. OF COURSE it's worth a grand! You have Merrell Sigma cameras. They are great, right? And they cost about the same, right? Well, this device will give your OM cameras the same capabilities as your digicams (D700, Merrills, etc. ) have, but you also get the ability to use film, with the extra steps film processing gives you. Then the scanners will make the negatives into digital files. WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE???

Hey ... I'm no scanning virgin here Chris!
I've been using a Epson V700 for several years but have always wanted something that would do a better job on 135 negs ... an area where the Epson is a bit marginal IMO.
Seems that it's a good deal then!

It would be less expensive for me to fly from Los Angeles to Sydney, buy that scanner for $1000, then fly back home than it would be for me to buy one locally.
I have one, and as someone stated, it is easily hacked to enable full roll scanning. I hacked mine, and if I can do it, practically anyone can.

Do it Keith, that is very very cheap.

As others have said, that's a very very good price. And an excellent scanner.

This is all good news as I'm about to sell my LS-4000 ED scanner to fund an 8000 ED so I can scan my Mamiya 6 negs.
The 5000 is a bit better than the 4000 and the 4000 is amazing, so jump on that scanner!

These probably sell for +/- 2500 USD, so I'd say it's a bargain. I only sold mine to get a 9000ED.

Keith, not to offend anyone, but Epson 700 scans on 35mm B&W Leica negatives, is like eating caviar with the peanut butter.

I've been using a V700 for some time. I was doing medium format mainly, and the V700 was a great bang for the buck. 35mm on the V700 always left me less than thrilled, but I wasn't doing much 35mm anyways...
Well, I got back into a Leica a while back, and started looking around at dedicated 35mm scanners. I found the Konica Minolta Scan Dual IV at a good price and bought one.
Wow. Well worth it. The difference between the V700 and a dedicated film scanner is very significant. I am now dealing with grain, not pixels. I am now dealing with film, not the scanner, and am enjoying 35mm a heck of a lot these days.
If I had the scratch I'd have gone for a Nikon like the one you have access to. If you can swing it, do! The V700 is just not meant for decent 35mm scanning.

Thanks for all the responses ... I'll take it for sure and there's no real panic because she's not in a hurry to get rid of it and has pretty well earmarked it as mine.
I'm looking froward to getting it, setting it up and seeing how much better than the Epson it actually is ... and that hack described above to get it to scan a full roll sounds very useful.
