The 105/2.5 does indeed have a bit more bite but I've had my 85 for over 20 years and it's the only Nikon tele that I still own. I LOVE its handling. At f/5.6 to 11 it concedes nothing and at wider apertures it's certainly useful, if lower in contrast than the 105.
