With the release this week of the AF-S DX Micro Nikkor 85mm F3.5G VR it looks like DX users needn't worry about the company dropping the DX format any time soon. I'm happy as DX is just fine for me. After the terrific 35/1.8 I'm certainly going to take a look at this new lens which they quote at $529.95. FX users will probably be grinding their teeth again and asking Why? :)

Eh, as much as I am jonesing for some new fast primes for FX, I understand it. The DX lens line has a lot of gaping holes in it, particularly in the prime arena. Once they catch DX up, I am sure the FX primes will follow.

I kinda missed my D40, I started with it and it's a great little camera. I traded it for a D200 because I felt "my gear was holding me back" (yeah right). If the 35/1.8 had been around I think I would have stuck with it!

That said, AF on older lenses and AI-s metering is pretty awesome! If only the D200 was lighter...

Too much money to be made in the DX format (what they don't make per unit - especially in lenses - is made up for in volume)
Exactly. The vast majority of Nikon's sales are DX, people who generally don't belong to photo forums. I understand that the 35/1.8 is Nikon's best seller and they are still in short supply months after initial release. Not surprising though given that it's such an absolutely cracking lens. The introduction of this micro 85 is perfect timing for me, I just sold my last macro lens - an old Tokina, so I'll be looking for the reviews on the 85. It looks like Nikon is trying to interest its massive DX market in primes so I wonder what'll be next...

I'm wondering about the logic of a DX macro lens.. Macro lenses are for people who are more than only superficially dedicated to photography. And in my perception, that means people who would rather eat white beans in tomato sauce for a year and get the 105 instead because of the additional working distance..
