I'm late to the discussion, but for what it's worth I have a Nikon D3100 and a 24mm Vivitar MF lens. I think the combo works well enough using the focus confirmation signal, and coming from old film cameras where I have used a separate meter to set exposure, having an instant review of an image to check exposure works much better. Also, it's a good walk-around street lens using hyperfocal distance focusing; quick, no AF lag. Here is one picture I like taken with the 24mm.
