Hi,

I´ve been looking for a dedicated film scanner for a while now. I´m was thinking of getting a Plustek 7300 but then I go offered a Nikon Coolscan IV ed for 400$. So my question for you guys, which one of those 2 would you recommend?

Why?

I'm curious myself, because I have the Plustek 7200, and I'm considering the Nikon myself.

Thanks.

In my case, the choice is simple. Plustek won't work on Linux. Nikon will. I only run Linux.

However, from a wider viewpoint, Nikon is known for their quality - Plustek, not so much. And unless I am mistaken, one drags the Plustek holder through the machine frame by frame, without the automatic advance of the Nikon. If I am wrong on that, I apologize in advance.

From what few scans I have seen, the Plustek is capable - but it does not possess the DMAX of the Nikon.

I have a Dimage Scan Dual IV, and if it dies, I may opt for a Nikon, since Konica-Minolta is no longer in the photography biz. I hope it will last awhile.

Thanks for all the replies. As was also leaning towards Nikon, well just because I trust them. But the Nikon IV ed was made in 2001 and replaced with the Nikon V in 2003 according to the mighty google.com. So you guys still thank the Nikon IV has advandace over the Plustek, even though it is 7 years old?

Yes, you are right about that. So far, it hasn't been an issue for me. But I suppose if I would get my hands on a Nikon, I would probably change my mind. 😛

I've heard that difference brought up before, but I have yet to see any real-world comparisons. I can't remember the website, but I also read somewhere (not the plustek website) that the DMAX is often played up, similar to how they do to resolution in the sales literature of cameras and scanners.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm just repeating what I heard. And until I see someone provide proof of the higher quality scan of a Nikon over a Plustek, it's all hearsay.

I've read something about dmax used as a marketing spec, when what's really important is the drange. Fortunately nikon doesn't spec dmax but actually drange on their site I believe. Or at least for the latest line they do. Anyway, I would probably assume the IV is better, despite age.
