Nikon coolscan v ed full roll

There is a hack to modify the SA-21 to accept a full roll, and it works on the Coolscan 4000 and 5000 because those two scanners have a gate in the back where the roll would exit the scanner.

I do not believe the V has such a gate, so even if you hack the SA-21, there is nowhere for the roll to go. Further, w/re to the V, I believe the back panel as well as the rest of the scanner is attached/welded to the base, so you'd have to disembowel the entire scanner just to mimic the gate on the 4000/5000.

IMHO, not worth the risk.

1st post here for you, Fraser.

I tried, the hacked SA-21 can not be use in scanner IV-ED and V-ED, Nikon Scan will tell you like "this adapter is not be support to this scanner"

It's OK to 4000ED & 5000ED.

I guess there's only tiny different between SA-30 and SA-21 with the electronic design, I don't believe NIKON will spend more costing to divide these 2 adapters. But I have no chance to test and verify my suspect since the SA-30 is too expensive and too less in the market.

Sorry my poor English, and I'm very glad to share my little experience to the film scanners.

Welcome to RFf!

I wonder how VueScan might see the hack? I was considering taking my IV-ED apart this weekend for a play!

Thank you Burancap

Vuescan shall be notice that like "plz insert film into scanner" the time, since the hardware will reject the adapter but none any clearly notice-signal be output by 3rd software than Nikon Scan.

did you ever try?
or has anyone tried, I still wonder if it would work and it wouldn't be that hard to cut the back!

Well seeing as I couldn't find any evidence on the web of someone trying it with vuescan or silverfast I tried it doesn't work!
Scanner doesn't recognise the converted sa21.

I think there's a hardware or firmware restriction on the scanner side, so not surprising.

I've no way to prove it myself either way, but I do remember the guys at the Nikon Service Center in Shinjuku, Tokyo telling me that the rollers / other hardware in the SA-30 are beefier for heavier use than the rollers / other hardware used in the SA-21.

I had the SA-20 adapter with my Coolscan III and it scratched every strip of film I ever put into it. Of course it would only do six frames at a time, maybe the full roll adapter was designed better. I thought it was a great idea, badly executed.

Best,

I use the sa21 all the time have no problem with it, its just I had a spare and thought I would try it. But now I have a converted sa21 thinking of upgrading my V to a 5000 just so I can scan a whole roll at a time, not sure if its worth it?
Anyone have both worth it ?
of course I've just bought silverfast so I would have to buy that again! but I have always wanted a scanner that could do a whole roll and since Pakon scanners have shot up in price there is not much choice out there.
Any input would be much appreciated, cheers.

I have used iv, 5000 and now a 4000.
I would say that the ability to scan whole roll is amazing. I cannot stand manual feeding the scanner anymore.
The 5000 is much faster if you can afford. Otherwise the 4000 is pretty close in terms of quality of scans.
