Nikon Coolscan V ED: RIP?

Thanks for your ideas Andy and Highway. The outboard fix is what my wife has done on her ancient PC she keeps fixing due to it running some equally ancient but much loved software she uses for work. I considered it but I'm now thinking saving up may be my best option as I could be tempted to go with a 35mm and MF scanner in one as medium format has been something I've been toying with getting back into.

There are some relatively cheap options (for 35mm film) but the reviews seem disheartening, though hardly surprising. Perhaps the Nikon 9000 May offer both a longer term option and the added option of different formats.

Whatever I decide I'll keep shooting film alongside the digital, even though I may have a very long stint using the new scanner when I eventually get one.

Andy, I hope yours keeps going for a long time yet!

This is a b ad news Simon, as owner of a 5000ED i cross my finger because I realize that 75% of my photography is based on an hybrid workflow and if the scanner goes....I do not see an equivalent machine on the market and this is disappointing, very disappointing...hmm, if only Leica would try to support their film Ms offering a scanner but they will not 🙁

When mine did this I almost had a heart attack. Then, a week later, I was brave enough to take it apart and look at the fuse. Bingo!

No clue why it went, but it did...

I had high hopes of a simple fix but unfortunately it appears not to be the case, glad to hear it was for you though. The V ED did a very good job for me over the years.

Hi Robert, during my initial research for a potential replacement I've seen plenty of 5000ED scanners for sale used...perhaps if you have some spare cash you may be well served to pick up another as a replacement and future parts. Or keep your fingers crossed for a Leica scanner...but I think we both know that's unlikely 🙁

The situation with scanners is part of the demise of film. Those Plusteks or Epsons give "ok" results with a lot of tweaking and fiddling - per frame.

Good luck with repairing the Coolscan because I dont think there is a viable replacement.

Just for knowledge in Italy Nikon gives the technical service to an external company (LTR). A few weeks ago I ask them about maintenance of my 5000ED and the answer was that they accept the scanner to be inspected but cannot make sure it can be repaired (if necessary), depending on which component should be eventually replaced (and its availability). At the end they didn't seem to be very interested in this service, they are mainly involved, better their experience is with digital cameras...
