Now that I'm back into film, I dusted off my scanner, but could not find
my installation disk!
Tried downloading some software for Vuescan, but it's not the same
program as my Coolscan came with. Anyone want to loan me the disk?
Don't remember if that is even possible. Don't remember if its only for
one owner? Any help appreciated. Thanks

On my Macbook Pro, the original Nikon software is does not run - it is no longer compatible with the operating system. I use Vuescan, and it runs fine.
(my scanner is the 5000ED, but they are practically the same machine.)

What operating system you are using? I bought Silverfast because old Nikon software did not work with the latest Win.

thank you
with the Nikon software, I could preview all 4 or 5 images at one time,
with this Vuescan, I guess I don't know WHAT I'm doing. of course, it says
I need to purchase the rest of it.

You can download Nikon Scan directly from Nikon here.
If it still works on your computer is another matter...

I have the same - asus zenbook with win10... I could not run Nikon software on win10 (unless there is a workaround). Many people prefer vuescan, but I am quite happy with silverfast.

if you want to use manufacture's software, Nikon Scan (as I do), you need install a customized driver.
I included Nikon software and inf driver here. https://goo.gl/7n4PPz
First time you plug the scanner, Windows will notify that i can't find the driver, no worry, just manual install it using the inf file provided in the link.
Afterthat, Install Nikon Scan as normal.
Goodluck.

You can still download Nikon Scan from Nikon's website. Here's the Download Link.
As others have said it will not work on Intel Macs and may not work on later Windows machines.
I use Vuescan, and you can batch scan with it. Here's instructions I wrote on how to do it:

Nope, opened a chat with NikonUSA and was told it was a no go.
Bummer.
is there a particular Silverfast version I should be looking for?

Nikonscan will work on your windows machine. I had it running on my Windows 10 machine when I had my Coolscan 8000. It wont run on any intel mac. If you wanted to run it you could get a powerPC mac from back in the day and you would be able to run it.
Likewise if you ran bootcamp, paralells, or the like you can run nikonscan on a mac.
You do need to modify the driver to get it to read though. I never had any luck running vuescan alone without the modified drivers on mac or PC.

Never used NikonScan ... Only saw it in operation once and it didn't look like it did anything I couldn't do with VueScan. I've been running VueScan on all my scanners since 2000.
You should look into buying a copy of 'The VueScan Bible' ... It is pretty complete and gives you a good picture of how VueScan works.
I use VueScan with both Nikon Coolscan V and Super Coolscan 9000 on latest macOS. It works very very well.

Sounds like you are using Windows. I can't help with that, but I can say that I've never gotten results with Vuescan that are as good as with the Nikon Scan software. (I'm using the same Coolscan V scanner.) The control over shadow detail and contrast and the same with highlight areas is amazing.
I use Macintosh so I got an old Mac G4 just to do this with. While the scan quality is really impressive and the software is way more intuitive to use than the always confusing Vuescan, the Nikon program is slow and prone to crashing or losing touch with the scanner if you try to leave it for an hour and come back.

the most common issue is a driver issue. the driver on the nikon software install disc will not be compatible with windows op system after XP. the go around is to install vuescan demo as it has a generic nikon driver that will work. then install nikon software and it should find the scanner. I did that and then bought vuescan as its a superior product, for me, over the nikon scan. just get to know how to use it and you will be fine
