Nikon Coolscan V ED

I am proud to say that I have a Nikon Coolscan V ED coming from the US. This will be my first film scanner. Needless too say, I am excited as I have been shooting my film, look at it once [uncut], cut them, and put in my printfile achival sheets.

In the days/weeks to come I will show some of my bad scans or quality scans. 😀

My only suggestion would be to get quality scanning software as opposed to the default Nikon software which is... clunky to say the least. Have fun.

Not sure if I completely agree with the nikon software being clunky.I use the provided nikon software that came with my coolscan 5000 on my Mac pro and it runs quite well
Id try it first before spending extra money on other software

I agree with this statement wholeheartedly. My experience using the included Nikonscan software has been extremely positive.

I started with vuescan when I bought my 5000, but later found that nikonscan gave me consistently superior results for both colour and black and white. I never use anything else!

I agree 100%. No doubt Nikonscan has a learning curve, but once mastered, you can manipulate a scan any way you want. It's all I use now.

I'm forced to use Viewscan because Nikon Scan will only stay open mere seconds before crashing on my old Powermac G4 (dual processor). Worked fine till I upgraded to OS from Panther to Tiger years ago, that broke Nikon Scan, and even removing and reinstalling it didn't help.

Congrats! I only use the NikonScan software and find it works well. I've tried a few other but I am most happy with the Nikon software...

Nikonscan works well with some scanners, with others like 8000ED it just causes problems. Also the ICE algorithm used when scanning with LS-50 (at least) is waste of time, since as a side product it smudges the image completely. If you can't be bothered to use a better software like Vuescan, NS delivers perfectly usable scans as long as you are aware of the pitfalls the software has 🙂

I vote for NS as well. but I do not manipulate at all in NS. All that is needed is done in PS.

For black and white I dislike nikonscan since you cannot set the black point of the film as you can with vuescan.

I'm using Nikonscan. I'm scanning mostly B&W and usually deselect all possible extra features. I'm fine with Nikonscan at the moment but I might try Vuescan again someday.

I've got a Coolscan 8000 and it works fine with Nikonscan. It does have it's quirks, but all in all I quite like it, and it's free 😉
