Hi everyone,
I've got a problem perplex me recently. When I was using my Coolscan Ved to scan my slides, it works, but when I inserted my B&W films, it pops a message and tell me the scanner cannot do autofocus. Please help !!

Thank you !

It may be a stupid question but: did you check to see that you changed the scan type from "Positive" to "Negative"?

If you did, did you change it from "Color" to "B&W"?

And if you did all of the above, then I'd check into these two things:

1) Is your film reasonably flat? If it's too curvy, or curled, or has weird bumps, it'll confuse the hell out of the autofocus algorithm.

2) Is your negative "thin"? Meaning, is the frame you're trying to scan very light, light enough that it's almost transparent. Or is the frame density too even, and yet light?

These scanners can be unexpectedly fussy at times. I have one roll of bulk film (one amongst several of the same type) from which the negs always give me trouble. If I insert the neg in the normal way, with the emulsion side down, the scanner immediately rejects it. But if I turn it over, emulsion side up, it reads ok. Strange.

Try flipping the film over and see if it works. :)

I see that notice time to time when I scan with my 5000 ED. I just click OK and the scanner continues as usual. Maybe my negs are curled or whatever.
