Nikon D60 - rangefinder!

Well, OK, not exactly.
But if features a focus aid scale in the viewfinder that tells you how in focus you are at a given focus point. Handy for non AF-S lenses that don't autofocus on that body. What I can't find out is whether it works for all Nikkors or just AF ones (the D60 will mount basically every SLR Nikkor ever made). If it does then it becomes a very attractive proposition for people with old lenses. Of course most here will be fine using the viewfinder to gain proper focus but in my experience modern digital finders are small, dark, and lack good manual focus capability (i.e no split-image rangefinder patch)

According to the D60 manual, the only prerequisite for the electronic rangefinder is a maximum aperture of f5.6 or larger..

For non-CPU lenses, the listed limitation is that it's restricted to M-mode, and that there's no exposure metering..

This isn't new or in any way unique to the D60. My D40 has the same, as does my D300.

My D40 also features an aftermarket split prism focus screen. 🙂

What is new, is that on the D40, the focus indicator is a blinking dot only. On the D60, it steals the exposure bar +___0___- This way you know how far you're off, and what way to turn the focus ring..

I wish they'd take it up a notch and graphically (or numerically) show you where your focus is within your (estimated) total DOF range.
